Monthly Archives: January 2016

FullSizeRender (16)I am starting this blog to keep track of my adventure Plein Air.

I started Plein Air in 2013 and now we have come into 2016 and I am at a crossroads. You see I am a acrylic artist and I have been struggling with my acrylic paint when I go out to Plein Air.

So this 2016 I am trying out water soluble oils v acrylic.

Well folks have been telling me that I need to give up Acrylic when I Plein Air and use oils. If I want to paint with my acrylic than use then in the studio.

This is my last acrylic plein air painting that I done.

Country Mailbox

This is a 3 1/2″ x 5″ Linen on Masonite Board in 2015

My son and I was exploring Waxahachie/MayPearl when we came across the a modern mailbox on a old county road. I had to use a medium (clear gesso) and a little bit of water to keep my acrylic from drying out.

Will I have been telling my self all last year that I am going to go out once a week and paint with oils but it had not happen for one I have not painted with oils since the 70’s and two I have heath issues traditional oils.
So the other day I just pull up my boot straps and went for it. If I am going to master Plein Air than I need to get off my duff and get out side and paint.
So I decided to set up in my drive way to paint the silo across the street. I felt like a fish out of water working in oils. But I kept think of my friends back in Southern Californian (PAAR) who work in oils and other paint
medium. I kept thinking as I painted what medium do they use, how do they paint, and so on.

Will I was just starting to get the hang of painting with the oils when the wind picked up and the sky started to get dark. So I stop and will try again tomorrow.

Here is where I am at with my painting.

The begining of the Famer Silo

Will I went back out the next day and thank God it was not windy so I got to finish my painting.

This is my 1st Plein Air painting in oils.
Also this is what I see every day when I walk down my driveway to the mail box.The Farm Silo

What I learn so far is that if you use a medium (I use water soluble Lessened oil) and you use to much it will brake down the oil and become watery, dose not wash out of your brushes easily, takes longer to dry, and smell strong of oil. That was on the first day.

The second day I did not use the water soluble Lessened oil so the paint did dry a little faster, still the water soluble oil dose not wash out of your brush to good in water. I found that I was cross coloring my oils on my brush and I could not blend my colors like I do with acrylic nor can I handle my canvas. But I did find out that I do like the scratching effects that you can get with oils on my painting. Something to think about.

Until next time, keep creating.
