Bluebonnets everywhere …

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting ( ein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

Will the Pre-Paint Historic Waxahachie Event kick off on April 1, and on that date, I went out painted the ….

Today, I decided to go to my backyard and paint my Bluebonnets again this year.

Here is a close-up of my Bluebonnets and the two different stages of my painting.

Now, I did not get to finish the painting, and that’s only because I have cataracts, and it is making it hard and painful to see to paint. But if it takes me a little longer to get a painting done, that’s fine with me. I am not going to push my eyesight and be in pain just to say I finish a painting.

   There is always another day.

On Tuesday, April 4, I had to work at the gallery that day. On Wednesday, April 5-7, the weather was cold and rainy.

So, on April 8th, the weather was overcast in the morning, but by noontime, it was in the low 70s. So I took my painting back outside and I finished it.

It felt good to be back outside painting again. I can’t wait to see what next week will bring for me to paint.

Title: Morning Stillness

Well, the official Per-Paint Historic Waxahachie Plein Air Event started on April 1, 2023

I have been waiting since January for this event. I almost did not get to participate because of my cataracts getting worse.

But on the first day of the event, I had my hubby take me to one of my favorite sites to paint.

I have painted the site for a few years now, and I keep coming  back.

Last year, I tried to paint this old building in acrylic and then watercolor, but I am sad to say it did not turn out good at all.

So this year, I went back and brought my watercolor and tried again.  And this time, I just had fun playing, and I got lost in my work.

For not knowing much about watercolors, I am ok with this painting.

Here is a little info from the Waxahachie Endanger Places.

WAXAHACHIE COTTON MILL
OFFICE

This little building is a remnant of an important part of Waxahachie history. In the early 20th century, Ellis County was one of the leading cotton-producing counties in the nation, and the Waxahachie Cotton Mill was the largest industrial operation in the county.
The mill began producing cotton cloth in April 1901 with 5,000
spindles and 150 looms and other labor saving devices that were
very modern for the time. At its peak, the Waxahachie Cotton Mill
was a large industrial complex with dozens of storage, processing
and support buildings; specialized equipment, machinery, and other
infrastructure. There was also a large boarding house and
numerous residences on the campus.
The office was originally located in the factory, but the machinery
was so noisy that in 1905, the management built a small separate
building just for the office. The mill office was built of “handmade
rough face stone,” and is only 1 of 2 buildings in Waxahachie that
were built using this type of cement stone….

My next painting is from the Pre-Paint Historic Waxahachie Event. I have been always interested in what my husband call “The Hanging Tree”.

Just before I decide to paint this painting hubby was talking to our neighbor in the back and he told us the history of this local tree that we see every day from our back yard. It seems that a couple of years before we move into our new home (we bought our house in 2015) a Tornado had touch down about a half a mile or so and cut across my back yard and through the two neighbors yards also before hitting this wall of trees and cutting across the farmers field. As you can see it was a small tornado for it remove the leaves from that one tree but sadly to say it never grew back again.

Here you can see that I had started the painting (in Acrylic) but I was having a hard time trying to paint with watery eyes and a running nose. Sorry for that gross picture 😵‍💫 (I also just found out last month that I have moderate cataracts too.) I was ready to trash this one in the burn pile but after a couple of days of rest I went back to it to see if I would salvage it and this is what I came up with…

In my head I could see some wild flowers and weeds but when I did added them in it through the hold painting off its kilter. So I remove it. I was every discourage with this painting but I am not ready to give up or throw in the towel. Will see with the next painting will bring.

I have read and have been told that you will paint 100+ Plein air paintings that come out bad before you will come home with one good one. Well if that is the case that I am on my way. Ha Ha

I’am calling this one “A Different View”. This will be hanging at the gallery Art on the Square, 113 W. Franklin St, Waxahachie, Texas. until the end of July.

——————————————————

Note: You will find that a lot of artist who post or blog like this one will write about how great things are or look at what a great painting I created. ( No offense to these artist or bloggers by any means or ways.) But I want to show y’all that we are artist do have bad days and bad paintings. We are only human.

There are day I do want to throw in the towel and give up Plein Air but there is something about being out side in nature that pulls on the artist soul…

But I will blog about all of that at a later date.

If you have any questions about the up and downs of Plein air, how and where to start, etc. Just leave me a comment and I will be happy to answer any and all of your questions. How knows it just might be apart of my blog.

—————————————————–

As I had said in my last post my allergies where kicking my butt and I was not alone. Other artist were painting at home too.

This was the first year that I could actually see the pollen flying through the air. So I too opted to stay home and try my hand at using my color pencils to draw the Texas State Flower, the wild Bluebonnets that are growing wild in my back yard.

In the evening when the wind would start blowing and cooling down the air so hubby and I would sit outside as I attempted to color in the leaves. But I abandoned this drawing 1. I was not happy how it was turning out & 2. I felt just like this little cartoon character below.

So I waited a couple of days before I head back out to try my hand again at painting those beautiful Bluebonnets. But this time I am going to have to create these in stages. You guess it AHHHHHH- CHOOOOOO!!!

I choose this Bluebonnets to use as my model as I sketch it out. I knew I did not want to use my Acrylic paint for this so I tryed my hand at using my watercolors pencils to paint with. Now I am not a watercolorest and I have only try painting once with any watercolors pencils back in the early 2000. But here I am about to try my hand at them again.

I spent sometime studying the colors of the Bluebonnets and just enjoying the feel of the pencils in my hand. It would take me back to my childhood when I would carry a box of Crayons and my coloring book every were I went.

Here is my 5″x 7″ Watercolor pencil painting call: “Lone Star Blooms.” This will be hanging at the gallery call Art on the Square, 113 W. Franklin St, Waxahachie, Texas.

What do you think of my painting. Did I capture the likeness of the State Flower? Is the Bluebonnet one of your favorite flower? I would love to hear what y’all think. 😉

I know I have not posted in a long time but …

This year Paint Historic Waxahachie Plein Air Event along with Waxahachie Historical Society “Save these Places” has resume after being close for two years due to Covid.

Well that explain why I can see color but i can’t read the highway, street signs until I am right on them. Don’t worry I am having hubby drive me around for now until I can have my cataracts remove.

I sign up for this event knowing that I was and still am having problems walking and seeing clealy right now. It seem that my C.K. Levels are still every high and is damaging my body. Plus I am told that I now have moderate cataracts. As Charlie Brown would say …

Now for some catch up on this year plein air event in Waxahachie, Texas.

This event always dose a pre-paint for the month of April. The gal’s that I hang out with would post were they were going to go out to paint, hang out and even go out to dinner. This year I am still in recovery from my C.K and my levels are going up, which means I am fall risk again plus my allergies are so bad that I have to stay in side most of that month. But when you been bit by the plein air bug you can’t wait to get out there and paint and that is what I did.

One of the gal’s who lives on a deer preserve invited all the plein air artist to come out and paint the lakes, Bluebonnets, 300+ old oak trees and the land.

I had hubby drive me out to the place. Once we got onto the property we had to cross over a narrow road or I should say a narrow road that cross over by one of the lakes.

Now I have a big fear of heights so I was so glad hubby was driving. I’ve found a spot away from the group.

Note: I did not want to be in competition with every one painting the same scene so I found a old tracker to paint but could not see it clearly. DARN CATARACTS!

This is what I was thinking of painting.
Here is a close up of the tracker.

When I turn to my left I saw this scene. So I decided to paint this tree which for some reason fascinated me.

I started with the bones of the tree but it felt like it has been forever since I plein air and I felt really rusty. Wouldn’t you not know it as i started to paint my allergies start to kick in.

As you can see here I have started the bones of the painting. I really like what I see and I am tempted to just leave it like this but I know that is not my goal.
Here is the finish painting. Title: Sweet Scent of Summer. It will be hanging at the Art on the Square, 113 W. Franklin St, Waxahachie, Texas

As you can see from the original photo I use my artist license to remove some items. I also move the Bluebonnets up into view of the painting too.

Once I finish the painting I was ready to go up front to see what I could paint again. But my crazy adventure has just be gone.

As we were heading to the front lot hubby ask me which way to go. That was the wrong thing to ask me. I told him to follow the tires tracks.

We drove and drove (I am told that there is 600 acres of deer preserve) and at times we could not see any tracks but lots of lakes.

As we drove around one of the lakes we came up to what look like a old barn.

Now if you know me you know I love old dilapidated barn. There are what help build America. They were the working man’s office.

By this time my legs are in pain from setting to long but when I saw this beauty I had to jump, will snail craw out of the car to go take pictures and explore.

What a gem to fine. I found out that this was an old cow pasture. Unfortunately I was not able to set up to paint that day but I will be back this fall to paint again. I just have to try and remember how we got there. 😳

My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted just over the hill.

————————————————–

It seem I have been playing catch lately. I just found out this year that I am a type 1 diabetic and their meds are driving me crazy. Literally.

It seems that my med that I was on was making me a depressed woman. And let me tell you that depression really dose hurts.

Well Per-Paint Historic Waxahachie was to start in April. And let me tell you that Texas weather is bipolar.

This year we only got to paint on three weekends of April and wouldn’t you know it, it rain during those weekend.

fb_img_15323984708431356541324.jpg

The first weekend it rain and I did not want to get out in it.

On the second weekend I was determine to get something done and wouldn’t you not know it, it RAIN again!!!

fb_img_15258166024921319480280.jpg

But there was this historic cotton solo and next to it a barn type coffee shop.

Well like I said it was rain so I decided not to paint but draw in my car. I just had to draw the historic cotton solo.

So I drove down to the site while the rain was light and as I park my car half on the road and half in the gully I began to draw. As I was getting into my drawing the rain started to get heavier and heavier and before I knew it the rain water was rushing under my car in the gully.

I started to feel the car move. Right then and there I pack up my supplies and pray to God to have the rain lighten up so I could get out of the passenger side of the car and walk around to the driver’s side so I could pull myself out of the circumstances that had gotten myself into once again.

Well rain did lighten up for a few mins but not as much as I would have like it too. But I hop out of my car and some how got around to the drive side and after spinning my wheels I manage to pull my self out out of that gully and slowly head home.

OH by the way, somewhere in my search for a good spot, my car pick up a nail or maybe it was in the gully. But I did make it home safe once again.

At the end of April someone from Hubby work told us about a patch of Bluebonnets along the Bardwell Lake in Ennis (Texas).

So hubby and I hop in his truck to search for the place. Once we found the place I could not believe how big they were. I knew I had to paint them.

But I wanted to try something different with my paints but what?

I got it! I will take 130 lb cold press paper and glue it a form cord and use it as a canvas. Yes that’s what I will do.

img_20180516_181911_014969994115.jpg

I thin my acrylic out with water and painted just like I was painting on a canvas but I got an watercolor effect.

About 5 days later I join some ladies from the gallery to go paint some historic home.

We found a cute 1920 one bedroom house but I am a landscaper painter and even tho the house is cute I fell in love with the lady’s small but cute garden area.

I grab my palette knife and started to paint the fence and before I knew it this is what I painted.

I call this Savannah’s bicycle after the owner of the house.

Will it is other over cast day again with the threat of rain.  I have house work piling up that I need to do but have been putting it off due to the painting event. And I know I had told ya’ll that I was going to start painting more building and houses so what better way that to paint this little gem that sit across the street from my back yard.

.So I am going to paint this little barn that sit across the street of my back yard.

I had told my self that I was going to start painting building and a little barn is a building so I went into my studio, grab my paints and brushes and sat out on my patio to capture this little gem

I am not really liking how it turn out, so it will go in the burn pile later on this year . But it is always a given that not every Plein Air or studio painting will turns out good, great or a master pieces. But it was a really good learning experience for me and I will take what I learn and apply it to my next building or house painting.

The other day I went out looking to paint some blue bonnets before it was to late and they where gone.

So I pack up my car and off I was driving around the other day on Old Waxahachie Road in Waxahachie, Texas and I found these lovely Bluebonnets and Indian Paint brushes that was calling to me too “PAINT ME”, “PAINTING ME”. Ha Ha

0412171318

I went back about a week later and for once it was a nice warm but over cast day with the sun coming and going. Not to bright nor hot for me.

0412171317b

When I found my spot I set up my gear next to my car and stated painting.

It was nice to listen to the birds sings but I could have not done with the bugs bugging me. Ha Ha

0412171433

Bluebonnets are not easy paint so I deiced to paint in a impressionistic style.

I think I will come back and try my hand at painting some up close just to see if I can a real a painting as I can. Will see how that goes.
