Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

On Friday April 30, at 6 pm the Ellis County Art Association held their first Ellis County Plein Air Spring Art Show with reception and awards.

I went to the reception and it was so good to see old friends and meet new artist too.

All the art work is amazing and what a joy it is to see the different places that we all painted.

I am going to start making a list of all the places I want to go paint in Ellis County for next year.

5″x 7″ acrylic painting (C)

5″x 7″ acrylic painting (C)

Well I did not win any award but my friends and some strangers gave me the best compliment on these two painting. I think next year I will paint more Bluebonnets and historical buildings.

So come on down and check out the show plus while you are there  check out the back of the gallery too for more great works of art.
The plein air show will be up from May 1 through June 30 during regular gallery hours,  Tuesdays through Fridays 12 pm to 4 pm,  Saturdays 10 am  to 6 pm,  Sunday 12 pm  to 4 pm and close on Monday.
This gallery is located at 113 W. Franklin St., Waxahachie, across from the historic courthouse.

Now I am going to shift gears for a bit and go back to drawing and studio painting between plein air adventures.

So pop on over to What’s on J.D. Easel on wordpress.com/ and see what I am up too.

After the rain in Corsicana I had decided not to go back and I am glad I did. It continue to rain out there but in Maypearl it was over cast, cool and a little breeze but nice and quiet.

I had been wanting to go back and paint this little old gate. So I decided to go the Maypearl instead of Corsicana.
Once I got to my spot I decided to use a smaller set up. That was the wrong thing to do. It toke me long to set up than if I had use my larger set up.

As I was painting I had a few folks drive by. But because I was by my self I kept looking over my shoulder. By the time I was done painting I had a sore neck.
In the first photo (I had taken that photo when I painted the barn a while back) the purple, blue and white little flowers had not come up yet when I took that photo, only the yellow ones were out. So when I came back to paint the gate the yard was full of these colorful flowers. The only thing that I embellish was the vine that was crawing up the post. It was only green and did not show well in the paint so I add color to it.
Here the finish painting…

Bluebonnets on Flag Hill

Welcome to My Crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get tThat’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me.
There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.
———————————————-
The other day some of my painting buddies, “The Ellis County Painter” had decided to go out to Sugar Ridge Winery & Bistro Bristol to paint the beautiful cattle ranches and the beautiful Bluebonnets on the Bluebonnets Trail.
Hubby drove me to the location which I am always happy to have him with me.

The group found a pretty little lake with two swans in it and a alot of Bluebonnets.
We pull over, I found my spot and I set up my gear, pull out a 11″x 14″ canvas board and sat down to paint.
Now I know that a lot of artist blogger will always but thier best foot forward when blogging but I want to be real with y’all.
I want to tell you what went on in my crazy artistic little head.
Ok let start with the lake…
As I look out across the lake I was drawn to a little rusty bridge, a Texas flag, lots a trees and the beautiful Bluebonnets.
I told my self, “This is what I want to paint”. So with all the confidence of the world in me I started to lay down the bones of the painting.
I thought that since it is Bluebonnets season that folks would not be out on Bluebonnet tail on a Monday, I was so wrong.
It seem that at the med morning and all day folks were coming to see the Bluebonnets and take photos.
As they stop to take pictures of the Bluebonnets I found them  come up from behind me and started taking pictures of me painting. My thought was OMG NO!!!  THIS PAINTING IS AT THE UGLY STAGE!
Will I kept painting but my confidence leave was starting to drop and my inner critic started to raise her ugly head. To tell the truth I just wanted to trash the painting, pack up and run with my tail between my legs.
Have any of ya felt that way?
I told my self that this year was my year to turn thing around and keep pushing my self.
As I sat there painting with folks coming up to check out my work and talk to me.
My allergies started to kick in and the bugs started to bit my legs. But I kept on painting, had a great time, earn a lot about the different folks who stop by and really work my brain muscle while painting. (with being sick for a little over a year I did not get outdoors to paint at all.)

This acrylic painting is an 11″x 14″ canvas board call Bluebonnets on Flag Hill.

The next day the group group all went to different locations to paint.
So I decided to go back to Maypearl (Texas) just down the street from where I live and go back to that 100 year old barn where we all painted at.
Text
I had spotted two little site that I want to paint last time but ran out of time.
So on this day the weather man siad we had a high chance of a rain storm to come in.  But I was going to take my chance and head out.
As I got to the site it was quite and the bird were singing and the bugs were biting.
Being by my self felt different but I did enjoy the alone time with nature. There was a few cars & trucks that drove by every now and then but over all it was quite.
As I was painted I found that the painting needed a little color so as you can see I took my artistic licence an embellish the fence line with a little color.
Next…
Once I completed the first painting I started on the gate painting. But as I started to put the bones of the painting down on canvas I could see the clouds starting to get a little dark.  But I kept painting and then I could hear way off in the distance thunder. Right there was my clue to pack up and go home.
Spoiler alert:
When I got home the storm had moved and it never rain that day.
This is acrylic painting on a 5″x 7″ canvas board call “Simple Pleasures”

Headed out to paint again

FullSizeRender (16)

Welcome to my Adventure Plein Air blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me.

There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

———————————————-

Last month my son and I went out for a drive and we found ourselves in a little town call Maypearl.

As we were driving around we can across this old but lovely old barn.

I could not wait to tell my painting buddy.
So on 04/05/2021 we all decided to go down and paint this beauty.
The own came down and was happy to see us painting her barn. We found out that there was actually two barns but years ago one caught on fire, she believes it was kids, and this barn is about 100 year old and is call Claunch Farm.
I have never painted a barn outdoors before. I always painted in my studio where I can take my time and add all the details that I like.
So this will be a learning curve for me.
As some of you know I have always had a problem with folks looking over my shoulder and watching me paint. I have never been bold or secure when painting around folks but this year all that went out the door and I’m just going to enjoy my time and learning my craft in outdoor painting.
So with that siad I was really surprise with how many cars drove by on that quite little street. Even the police drove by and stop and talk to us about how they are glad someone is painting that old barn that they love so much.
Well I am not much of a urban painter, my thing is landscape but this year I told my self that I was going to learn how to paint buildings and what better way to start than with an old barn.
So I set up my gear and broke out my acrylics. This time I try to paint with a wet palette (something that I don’t usually do). It work OK at first but then the wind came up a little and my sponge started to dry out and my paper wanted to fly away, but I press on.

You can see the barn way in the background.

Here is a close up of my painting. It did not turn out as I had hope but I will place it in the show. Who knows it could sell but if it doesn’t than I will think about placing it in burn pile.

But I have to say I did learn alot from this painting and I enjoy the process too.
Spoiler Alert: The gal’s and I are talking about going back to the old barn to paint some more. My plan is to paint two little 5″x 7″ painting of the landscape.

04/07/2021
Today the group went back to Midlothian to finish up there painting. When we all left it was warm and sunny at our homes but once we got to Midlothian it turn cold and windy and it look like it might rain too.
The cold air really did not bother me but the wind bother my little ears. As far as I can remember as a kid when the wind blew I would always get an earache. So I decided to just draw this time but there was one problem, I left my drawing gear at home. So I scramble to see what I had with me. And all I could fine was my 5″x 7″ Sketchbook, a pencil, a piece of eraser and a household black pen.

As I sat in my car I had decided to draw this Italian restaurant call Amore.

After I was done drawing the group and I went over there to eat lunch.
After we where done eating I went back to my car and grab my paints and my water fountain painting that I so needed to tweak. It really bug me that the large bowl was leaning to the side a little. So now I feel better about my painting after I tweak it a little.

Ellis County Spring Plein Air

Welcome to My Crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

———————————————

Because of the continue shut down with the coronavirus this year in 2021 the Art Gallery “Art on the Square” will not be holding their annual Paint Historic Waxahachie Event for the 2nd year in a row.

So the gallery board came up with a great idea of “Ellis County Spring Plein Air event”.
We will be able to paint anywhere in Ellis County for the hold month of April. YAY!!!
So a group of artist (my friends) have gotten together and on the first day of the month we all went out to the town of Midlothian.
We had lunch at Campuzano Mexican restaurant out on the patio. The sun was warm and shining plus there was a gentle breeze in the air.
When we were done with lunch they all pick a spot and started painting.
It has been close to a year and a half since I last painted outdoors. I had bought a new set up (as you can see here in this photo) that I never got to use yet.

This year I have decided to use a wheelchair and this is why. I use to carry a camping chair, my art supplies box, a small table and my painting umbrella. But after I read a post were a lady went to a Thrift store and bought herself a Walker so that she could use it in two different ways. One way was she could put all her art supplies that she carried on the seat of the walker and when she got to her destination she would set up and use the walker as a chair.

This has always intrigue me, so this year I am going to try it out.
So as the gal’s found their spots, I walk around looking for something simple to paint but I also knew I want color. I love color in a painting. So as I walk around the back of the restaurant patios I saw this lovely water fountain with these colorful flowers and I knew I had to paint them.

So I set up my new easel and look at the canvas with a brush in my hand and I told my mojo (Background info: After not being able to paint outdoors for so long, I felt like my mojo had left me and went on a vacation. She had not even the courtesy to send me a post card from the Bahamas. Ha Ha )

Well I sat in front of my easel looking at the canvas and I took a deep breath and said to my mojo, “Welcome back from the Bahamas. Now it’s time to get to work”. And we did.

What I have found out with the new set up is that my canvas holder is a little crooked when holding my canvas. I try to keep it straight while painting but after I was done I could see the large blow of the water fountain came out a little crooked but with Plein Air painting, they are never perfect like a studio painting are.
I must say after completing this painting I got such a rush. I can’t want to get back outdoor to paint again.
