If you have been wondering where I have been, in May, I was participating in the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event when my hubby told me that his hip was getting  really bad ( he needed a hip replacement) and he did not know how long he could last.

That made me pull out of the event  so I could go and get my cataracts surgery done ASAP.

As an artist, I was hoping to hold off surgery until the end of May. I so wanted to get back into plein air again, but the universe once again had other ideas.

You see, back in 2020, I had become Paralyze and was in a wheelchair until early 2022.

But I did not let that stop me. With the help of my sweet hubby, he took me out to paint wherever I wanted to go.

It must have been a real struggle for him to load up all my gear, the wheelchair, get me in the car, out of the car, and set up my gear so that I could get some painting done all the while his hip was bothering.

In med 2022, I was told that my cataracts were getting bad, and I would need surgery. But another doctor told me that I could hold off from surgery for other two or three years. He was WORNG…

So jump to this year. I had been working as a co-chair to the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event, and one of my jobs was to check out ALL OF Ellis County here in North Texas. Again, hubby drove me around, and I was so looking forward to this year paint out.

I also during this time in April. I joined the Urban Sketches group of Fort Worth/Dallas

I had no clue what to bring, what you are supposed to draw or paint. But I have to say the group welcomed me with open arms and shared with me what I need to know. Hubby sat in the care watching TV on his phone, but little did I know how much pain he was in.

Now, let’s jump to May. As we started the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event, I was only able to get five paintings done before I pulled out.

If you would like to read about any or all the painting, just scroll down on the blog.

I am planning on getting back involved with OPS and hitting the road to Plein Air again, but I am looking at the fall for this due to hubby’s Full Hip Replacement. So, I will be posting once to twice a month to let y’all know how things are going.

But I do have another blog that you can follow also https://whatsonjdeasel.wordpress.com/

First Baptist Church in Palmer

Friday-04/14/23

Β Β  Today, we got a late start again. It was a little after 11:00 am when we left the house.Β

Β Β  I have been wanting to paint the First Baptist Church-Landmark in Palmer (Texas).

Β Β  I had decided that I was going to paint again with my watercolors so I loaded up the car and away we went.

Β Β  Well, I could tell Hubby was not feeling well.Β  As he was driving for some reason, he was thinking of going to Palmer but was driving to Ferris. When I realize which way we were heading, that means we would be that much longer on the road to get to Palmer and for me to paint the church.

Once we got to the church, it was sunny with clouds cover and light wind.

I ask hubby to park across the street at a small grassy storage unit. We are talking county style.

I set up and started to paint, but the problem is my cataracts are making  it hard for me to see clearly, but I am determined to try my hand at painting this church.

As I was painting, the sky started to get dark, and I thought it was going to start raining, but then the sun would come out and burn my arms.

Before I knew it, the clouds were back, and I just kept painting.

Β Β  It was about 3:00 pm and my eye are starting to hurt, my mind, eyes and hand is not working together (my eyes are getting really tied and they hurt) so I call it a day and will need to go back and finish my painting.

Note: What I am finding out is if I had painted with my acrylics, I would have completed this paint in no time but because I am use watercolor it is a learning experience on how much water to use, how much paint to mix, what brushes to use, etc. But most of all, until I am more experienced with watercolors, I will not be painting on an 11″ x 14″ sheet of 120 lb watercolor paper while plein Air.

Note: We came back on Monday even though hubby was sick so I could wrap up my painting.

Friday – April 14, 2023

Today is a busy day, I had Bible Study in the morning and hubby, and I had to go see the eye doctor in the afternoon for my per-op on my cataracts surgery. So after Bible Study and before the eye doctor, hubby took me out to Getzendaner Park so that I could do a drawing for the PHW event.

There is an old gnarly tree that have what my hubby calls warts on them. I have been wanting to draw or paint them for some time. So, I made up my mind that today is the day to get it done. So when we got to the park , I found the tree with the warts were gone but one, and he has survived all the wind and storms that we have of the last five years.

Well, I had hubby park in front of the last gnarly, knotted tree in the hold park. I pulled out a little 5″ x 7″ 120 lb watercolor paper and sat in the car to save time and started to draw out my tree in pencil. Once I was done sketching in my tree, I went to my faber-castell to finish drawing my tree out.

Later, after my appointment, I will come back and add color with my watercolors.

Well, as I was drawing out my tree, a cute little squirrel jumped on one of the knots and sat there for about 8 or so mins. I had to stop drawing and take a bunch of pictures of him. How do I know it was a he? He stood up…

Hubby asked me if I was going to add him to my drawing? I said yes. (*u*) But there is just one problem where I want to place him. I have already added some lines. But that won’t stop me …

I had to kinda scrunch him in but I like how it turn out. Now off to the eye doctor.

Well I am back and this coming Thursday, I will have my right eye done, and then one week later, my left eye. But in the meantime, I am going to continue to get out there to paint, draw, and blog.

So back to the park to color my drawing.

Now the we are back at the park and I ‘m going to continue to sit in my car but do I really want to try and set up my watercolors in my cramp HHR or I could use my watercolor pencils which is so much more easier to use. I will do that.

Birdhouse Part-1

Tuesday – April 11, 2023

Β Β  Will once again hubby and IΒ  got a late start this morning. I had no plans on going out to paint today but hubby was insistent so we left the house around 11:30 am (like I said it was a late morning) and we headed out to Rockett (Texas) for me to paint what I call “Birdhouse Community.”

Β Β  When we got there, I was thinking that I could paint from the back of my car while hubby sat in the car and watch TV on his phone or watch DVDS on the DVD player. But I am finding out that my eyes are really bad now

and I just about had to sit on top of the birdhouses to see it. Ha HaΒ

Β Β  As I was setting up my gear close to the birdhouse, a lady fromΒ across the street came over. Apparently, this 70 year old lady is the church watcher. What I mean by that she make should that whoever is on the Historical church grounds, they are not there to deface the church or the grounds.Β

Β Β  This lady lives across the street, and she comes across the street to ask me what I am doing?Β  I told her that I was a Plein Air artist and that I wanted to paint the birdhouse. She asked me if I was going to paint “the church sign”?Β  I said “No the birdhouse.” she asked me two more times, and I told her again “No the birdhouse. “Finally she got it and she told me that one of the church member made that birdhouse and after 30 minutes or more of her talking, to me aboutΒ the history ofΒ Rockett, how the town attracts lightning, how the lighting destroyed the Rockett High school 2x, howΒ  we need to take sage and lemon for our health and more. She finally left, and I got to work on myΒ  simple little birdhouse community painting.

Β Β  I have decided to use my watercolor set and not worry about setting up my easel and all my supplies for my acrylic. Note: as you can see from other paintout

Β Β  All I wanted to do was just play and not worry about creating that one painting that the judge might like or win.

Β Β  So I sat in front of the birdhouse and started to paint, but I didn’t want to paint the big tree that was behind the birdhouse from across the street. Now I am not a watercolorist and I have a lot to learn about watercolors, so I decide to go with a loose feel but how do I do that. Hummm?

Β Β  I will wet my paper and just blend the green onto the paper. No start over. Next, I re-wet the paper, and I try my hand at making blooms. While it was wet, it looked cool, but once it was dry, as you could see, I flopped.

Β Β  While I was sitting there listening to nature, I found that working with watercolors ready made me think of my mixing colors, where I wanted my brush strokes, where to place my shadows, and so much more With my acrylic, I don’t think of these thing for they are now old hat to me. But watercolors are a challenge and fun.

Β Β  Once I reached a point in my paint, I knew to stop. So I packed up and made sure my area was clean where I was painting and went back to the car.Β  Hubby and I headed back to Waxahachie for us to have an early dinner at Braum’s.

Β Β  Once we got home, I decided to try and remove all that background green. I successfully did it, but I also somehow removed some of my shadows. When I go to Palmer (Texas), I will drive through Rockett and go back to the church and touch up my painting.

To be continued…

Monday – April 10, 2023

Β Β  Today, I wanted to go out to Rockett, Palmer, anywhere to paint in Ellis County, but I have to depend on my sweet hubby to drive me everywhere because of my bad cataracts.Β

Β  Β Well, he got up late this morning, and I feel that the morning is now shot. I am getting frustrated and a little depressed because I have to depend on someone else time. So today is a bust, and I have lost at least 4 to 5 days of painting so far due to weather also.

Β Β  This Saturday is theΒ DFW Urban Sketches, and they will be in my hometown, Waxahachie. We are all to meet at the downtown square. YAY!!! I want to check them out and see what they are all about. They only meet once a month in the DFW area. I think that it will make a nice day trip for hubby and me every once in a while.

Β Β  In the meantime, hubby and I spent the day in the backyard, soΒ I decided to pull out my little Linus bag (sketch bag)

so that I can draw one of the buttercup weeds that is growing wild in our backyard.

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting ( ein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

Will the Pre-Paint Historic Waxahachie Event kick off on April 1, and on that date, I went out painted the ….

Today, I decided to go to my backyard and paint my Bluebonnets again this year.

Here is a close-up of my Bluebonnets and the two different stages of my painting.

Β  Β Now, I did not get to finish the painting, and that’s only because I have cataracts, and it is making it hard and painful to see to paint. But if it takes me a little longer to get a painting done, that’s fine with me. I am not going to push my eyesight and be in pain just to say I finish a painting.

Β  Β There is always another day.

On Tuesday, April 4, I had to work at the gallery that day. On Wednesday, April 5-7, the weather was cold and rainy.

So, on April 8th, the weather was overcast in the morning, but by noontime, it was in the low 70s. So I took my painting back outside and I finished it.

It felt good to be back outside painting again. I can’t wait to see what next week will bring for me to paint.

Title: Morning Stillness

Well, the official Per-Paint Historic Waxahachie Plein Air Event started on April 1, 2023

I have been waiting since January for this event. I almost did not get to participate because of my cataracts getting worse.

But on the first day of the event, I had my hubby take me to one of my favorite sites to paint.

I have painted the site for a few years now, and I keep coming  back.

Last year, I tried to paint this old building in acrylic and then watercolor, but I am sad to say it did not turn out good at all.

So this year, I went back and brought my watercolor and tried again.  And this time, I just had fun playing, and I got lost in my work.

For not knowing much about watercolors, I am ok with this painting.

Here is a little info from the Waxahachie Endanger Places.

WAXAHACHIE COTTON MILL
OFFICE

This little building is a remnant of an important part of Waxahachie history. In the early 20th century, Ellis County was one of the leading cotton-producing counties in the nation, and the Waxahachie Cotton Mill was the largest industrial operation in the county.
The mill began producing cotton cloth in April 1901 with 5,000
spindles and 150 looms and other labor saving devices that were
very modern for the time. At its peak, the Waxahachie Cotton Mill
was a large industrial complex with dozens of storage, processing
and support buildings; specialized equipment, machinery, and other
infrastructure. There was also a large boarding house and
numerous residences on the campus.
The office was originally located in the factory, but the machinery
was so noisy that in 1905, the management built a small separate
building just for the office. The mill office was built of β€œhandmade
rough face stone,” and is only 1 of 2 buildings in Waxahachie that
were built using this type of cement stone….

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Today, I want to talk about the struggle that I am going through right now. You see, I have cataracts right now, and I can’t see.

What I mean by that is I can see color clearly, but objects, words on signs are a big blurb until I get about 100 or so feet in front of them. Scary, I know.

I have stopped driving just as safety to myself and other drivers. My sweet hubby has been my driving me around without a complaint.

Now let’s jump a head…

I have to go see my optometrist/ ophthalmologist twice a year because of my low scale diabetes to keep my eye healthy. Will at the end of last year my eye doctor (as I like to call him) said my cataracts had gotten worse and he wanted to do surgery right away.

I felt uneasy on the way he was being so pushy, so I checked with another eye doctor, and he said I was fine for another one to three years before I needed surgery. This year, I found that my eyes had gotten worse due to some meds that I had to take to help me walk.

If you have been reading my later post, I talk about being one of the co-chairs for the “Paint Historic Waxahachie Event.” Hubby and I scouted all the towns and cities in Ellis County of where the artist can go and paint this year for the Pre-Paint event.

Now, my new optometrist/ ophthalmologist wants to operate on my cataracts at the end of March.

But here is my dilemma… on April 1-29 is the Pre-Paint Historic Waxahachie Event, May 5-17 is the actual event. And we added a Quick Draw Event on May 20th so that the artist can paint or draw anywhere around the square.

Do I go ahead and have the surgery sometime in April (I lost the appointment in March), loss the money that I paid for this event? Plus, in mid-April, the Outdoor Painters Society will be in town to paint their event, which I have signed up for, too.

What’s that old saying? “You can kill two birds with one stone.” Well, that is what I am trying to do.

But to tell the truth, my eyes are tired, and at times, they hurt, but I am an artist, and I have been looking forward to this event since last year. Unfortunately, last year, I struggled with severe allergies and being unstable in my walking. (Note: I can walk like everyone else now but still have allergies 🀧)

I want so badly to do this event, but I am afraid that it could turn out to be fastrating.

What would you do? Would you take a chance and participate in the event or go for the surgery? Let me know what you think, and thank you for letting me be real with my dilemma.

The 2024 Painting Plan

The 2024 Outdoor Painting Plan

Happy 2024 New Year!

I hope you and yours plus your friends had a great 2024 New Years Eve and Day.

Can you believe 2023 went by so fast. It seems liked I just blink and it was Spring, then Summer and then Fall, and before I knew it, it was New Year’s Eve.

As we all headed into 2024 most folks made their New Year’s Resolution. I normally don’t participate in the New Year’s Resolution because I am one of the 98% of folks that by February will break or forget my new year plan. But this year I decided to put a simple Painting New Years Resolution for the coming 12 months.

Why am I telling y’all this? It is a way of being accountability to all of ya.

You may be asking yourself “What is your plan for your art in 2024?

I normally in some way will set some small goals/plans for myself (Not a New Year’s Resolution) that I feel that I can achieve. Throughout the years I have found that if I don’t at lease set some goals/plan for myself I well tend to drift through the year or even life. Even when life getting in the way as it did in 2023, I still had a choice to move forward with my goals and plan.

In the first part of 2023 I did more forward but then I had to have Cataract surgery, hubby had to have hip surgery shortly after that and one of my favorite galleries had to close down due to high rent. So, I stop my goals and plan and the rest of the year went by so every slowly and I have anything to slow for it. My painting did not improve, and my inspiration got put on a shelf.

But this year I am working towards a goal that I can follow so that I can make progress for my art in 2024.

Now I am going to keep this plan simple.

My plan for my painting in 2024 is this:

* Study and learn – 30 minutes for three or four days.

* Painting – 30 minutes to 2 hours per three times pre-week

* re-join the OPS (Outdoors Painter Society) and plan some trips for Plein Air painting and photo references

* Go out on my own to practice my sketching/painting skills

*Look for some online galleries and one or two stone and brick building (fingers cross)

* Practice my sketching skills

* Sell 25 paintings for year.

*Get back to blogging again

These are my minimum commitments to myself for 2024.

The most important thing about this simple plan is it is based around CONSISTENCY.

One of my online teachers is Rod Moore and he said in an email, “Setting some goals is like setting the sails in your yacht. The same winds blow on us all but those who have their sails set tend to get where they want to go.”

So, as we jump into 2024, I will do my best to blog about my art and othering.
