Tips for plein air events:

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting ( ein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

Now that artists are gearing up to paint the great outdoors, I would like to take this moment to post some tips from Nancy Tyler for the Texas Outdoor Painters Society.

Here is what Nancy has to say…

Tips for plein air events:

By Nancy Tyler

1. Drink lots of water, it will keep you alert, your energy level up, and your joints lubricated.

2. Prepare for warmer temps than expected and cooler temps than expected.  In Texas, anything goes weather wise.

3. Read the rules and know the timeline of the event.

4. Prep and measure your frames (and mats if needed) before the event. Double check (maybe triple check) that you have tools and supplies you need for framing

5. Budget your time. Schedule time for travel, meals, framing, etc. Then stick to your schedule when you’re painting.

6. Enjoy the process, which is easier said than done in a competition setting. Be serious when painting, but then stop and have fun!

7. Socialize with other painters. Introduce yourself to other painters and ask them a few questions about their paintings. You can make painting friends pretty easy at an event like this because you all share a love for painting!

Who is this gal name J.D. Fields

🎨 My name is J.D. Fields and I love to draw and paint nature.

🎨 I’m a Texas artist.

🎨 I married my best friend and soul mate in 1998.

🎨 My husband has three children, two boys and a girl, and I have one girl and two boys. When we got married, we put them together and called us all family

🎨 I am an acrylic artist, but I love to play with watercolor, watercolor pencils, and color pencils.

🎨 When did I start learning to draw? I can remember being two and half years old, laying on my grandma kitchen floor, trying to draw the animal on her land.

🎨 Growing up, I have been able to explore many different mediums – Fabric Art, Crocheting, Oil Paint, Pen & Ink Painting and Color Pencils, Charcoal and Graphite Pencil. Along with acrylic painting.

🎨 Do you sell your work? Yes, I sell my originals, painting, drawing, and greeting cards online and in galleries.

🎨 Do you teach classes? Yes, I teach acrylic for Beginner’s workshop to adults. I also teach drawing and acrylics for teens.

🎨 Back in the early 2000, I had wanted to try my hand in plein air.      In July 2013, I took the plug and never looked back.

🎨 Whether I’m in my studio or outdoors, I am still learning to draw upon those early influences in a way that I look at life, the subject I chooses and the matter in which I paints.

It has been a while since I last spoke to all of you. I have not been able to get outdoors to paint or draw due to that fact that I am still having issues with my CK levels and now I have cataracts too.

But I am not going to let this stop me for I am planning on having surgery early next year so I can get back to Plein air and also participate in the Historic Paint Waxahachie Event in May. Plus any other event that I run across before the summer hits. But in the meantime I will have hubby take me out this month so I can get back into the swing of things.

So with that said, to anyone who will be traveling this Christmas season and are thinking of taking your oil paints with you on the plane, here is a little helpful tip from Jerry Art Arama.

Plus here is another tip that I have found useful with all wet mediums. It doesn’t matter if you fly, drive, train or bus, do this every time you travel.
Wrap each tub of paint in plastic wrap and place them in a storage bag. Once they are all bag, place then in a larger storage bag for travel.
This will guarantee that if a tub opens, leak, etc. It will not get all over your art supply or clothes. Also if you are traveling by plane make use you contact the manufacturer for an info page on taking you art paints on the plane.

I also want to wish you a big …

Note: My apologies to everyone who is reading this. I am late posting this blog but I feel that it would still be worth reading.

Now that the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event has been over since May I had plans to continue to go out and Plein air…

So I started in my back yard with my Texas Bluebonnets Wild Flowers. But this time instead of painting I wanted to just draw with my color pens. Here is my simple drawing.

I had plan on getting out there to paint but then the Texas summer came in early and before I knew it we are hit with extreme heat and drought.

So now I am between a rock and a hard place. I just found out that I have cataracts in both eyes but worst in my right eye. Plus since I got sick back in 2019 I can’t tolerate the heat now.

So what is a gal to do?

As I was watch some YouTube videos I came across Sarah Burns of Sarah Burns Studio and I want to share her take on the 30 Day OutDoor Painting Challenge. (this was in April)

This has given me renew hope in how I can keep up with outdoor painting while taking off the pressure of creating paintings all the time. I love this idea.

30 Day Outdoor Painting Challenge

So after watching her video I created a little drawing bag that my hubby likes to call my “Linus Bag”. (If you ever watch the Peanuts than you know Linus always carry his blanket ever where he went.)

Here I have converted a bible book bag that I had laying around the house for years and have place my 5×7 sketch book, a variety of color writing pens in a pencils notebook bag, a tissue that I can use to wipe my writing pens with, a face make, a set of drawing pencils with an eraser, a little pink container that holds a rule, pencils sharpener, black pen, a small paintings brush to wipe away any crumbs from my eraser, two bandaid and two granola bars ( I am a diabetic) and business cards plus some odds and ends.

This little art bag that I created goes with me everywhere I go. And when I see something that I want to draw I don’t have to worry about looking for something to draw on or having to go back at a later time (this usually never happen for me) for I have my little handy art bag.

Here is a plein air drawing that I did while waiting for my hubby while he took care of business on his truck. As I sat in the car I decided to draw these trees in pen. So glad I had my little Linus Bag with me so that I could capture the moment.

This is me in the middle with my two plein air friend Barbra Malmberg on the right and Bonnie Kent on the left.

Until next time my friends. Keep creating and God Bless.

Bluebonnets on Flag Hill

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get tThat’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me.
There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.
———————————————-
The other day some of my painting buddies, “The Ellis County Painter” had decided to go out to Sugar Ridge Winery & Bistro Bristol to paint the beautiful cattle ranches and the beautiful Bluebonnets on the Bluebonnets Trail.
Hubby drove me to the location which I am always happy to have him with me.

The group found a pretty little lake with two swans in it and a alot of Bluebonnets.
We pull over, I found my spot and I set up my gear, pull out a 11″x 14″ canvas board and sat down to paint.
Now I know that a lot of artist blogger will always but thier best foot forward when blogging but I want to be real with y’all.
I want to tell you what went on in my crazy artistic little head.
Ok let start with the lake…
As I look out across the lake I was drawn to a little rusty bridge, a Texas flag, lots a trees and the beautiful Bluebonnets.
I told my self, “This is what I want to paint”. So with all the confidence of the world in me I started to lay down the bones of the painting.
I thought that since it is Bluebonnets season that folks would not be out on Bluebonnet tail on a Monday, I was so wrong.
It seem that at the med morning and all day folks were coming to see the Bluebonnets and take photos.
As they stop to take pictures of the Bluebonnets I found them  come up from behind me and started taking pictures of me painting. My thought was OMG NO!!!  THIS PAINTING IS AT THE UGLY STAGE!
Will I kept painting but my confidence leave was starting to drop and my inner critic started to raise her ugly head. To tell the truth I just wanted to trash the painting, pack up and run with my tail between my legs.
Have any of ya felt that way?
I told my self that this year was my year to turn thing around and keep pushing my self.
As I sat there painting with folks coming up to check out my work and talk to me.
My allergies started to kick in and the bugs started to bit my legs. But I kept on painting, had a great time, earn a lot about the different folks who stop by and really work my brain muscle while painting. (with being sick for a little over a year I did not get outdoors to paint at all.)

This acrylic painting is an 11″x 14″ canvas board call Bluebonnets on Flag Hill.

The next day the group group all went to different locations to paint.
So I decided to go back to Maypearl (Texas) just down the street from where I live and go back to that 100 year old barn where we all painted at.
Text
I had spotted two little site that I want to paint last time but ran out of time.
So on this day the weather man siad we had a high chance of a rain storm to come in.  But I was going to take my chance and head out.
As I got to the site it was quite and the bird were singing and the bugs were biting.
Being by my self felt different but I did enjoy the alone time with nature. There was a few cars & trucks that drove by every now and then but over all it was quite.
As I was painted I found that the painting needed a little color so as you can see I took my artistic licence an embellish the fence line with a little color.
Next…
Once I completed the first painting I started on the gate painting. But as I started to put the bones of the painting down on canvas I could see the clouds starting to get a little dark.  But I kept painting and then I could hear way off in the distance thunder. Right there was my clue to pack up and go home.
Spoiler alert:
When I got home the storm had moved and it never rain that day.
This is acrylic painting on a 5″x 7″ canvas board call “Simple Pleasures”

———————————————–
I am planning on going out on a paint out this February 26, 27 and I have pack up my plein air gear and well start packng my clothes but I have to admit I am getting a little nervous to go out the the paint out.
You see the last time I got to paint was in September 2019 with the Outdoor Painters Society to the Balloon Festival in Plano, Texas.
At that time I did not know I was getting sick and would soon not be able to walk.
Now that I have recovered and I am able to walk on my own with no pain but still use a walker 50/50 of the time, I have once again sign up to join the Outdoor Painters Society to go on a paint out at Graham, Texas.
I am so hoping my inner critic dose not raise up it ugly head and start screaming at me about painting with Acrylic when everyone is painting in oils.
I hear from other artis all the time that I should paint with oil and not acrylic, because acrylic dry to fast and you can’t blend l Iike you do with oil. Oil are so rich in color where acrylic look flat.
When this happens I can’t enjoy my time painting. And beside I am Allergic to oils, that’s why I paint in acrylic an I love it.
Update:
I will not be going out to Graham, Texas to paint with the plein air group this week.
Hubby got a call from his dad that his mom is in the hospital. She is bleeding internally and they don’t know why.
So the next morning I told him to pack a bag and go see about his parents.
I am heart broken that I will not be able to get out of this house to paint (I have not drove a car for over a year now since my illness) but my husband needs to be with his parents and there is always next month when the group will be going out to Corsicana,Texas for their next paint out.

San Antonio paint out

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

————————————————–

It is now October in my plein air adventure and OPS is planing to go to San Antonio to paint the missions and the river walk.

Hubby has taken his vacation and we are going to take the “Beast” out, (our 42 ft 5th Wheel) on a trip to San Antonio with OPS.

fb_img_1542473633462267138002.jpg

Note: 10/08/…

WOW! A bad Texas rain storm has hit the house. As you can see I already have little lake’s in my back yard.

I wonder how long this storm will last?

Note: 10/09…

It is still raining and from what the news man said this morning we are in our second severe storm and we still have a third one coming in. The next storm will bring cooler weather and kick off fall for us by tonight.

All I can think of …”Just don’t rain while I am in San Antonio on the Outdoors Painter Society paint out event next week”. I am so looking forward to this event, get outdoors to paint, meeting up with old friends and making new one.

Note:10/10…

I can’t wait for next Wednesday. I am going to San Antonio, Texas for a week. YAY!!!

For three days I will be with the Outdoor Painters Society painting with old and new artist friends and then after the event is done Bruce and I will become tourist and just enjoy the town together.
So I am busy clean house, working the gallery, church duties, and getting my art supplies ready plus the RV too.

Note: 10…

I was just outside putting the last of my art gear and some clothes in the Beast (5th wheel) for our trip this Wednesday and boy it is cool!!! out there. The temp is 43* put the wind chill feels like the low 30*
Makes me question why I love to Plein Air. Ha Ha

I sure do hope its not raining in San Antonio. Hubby dose not allow me to paint in his truck.

We will see what happens…

Note:10/16…

Snoopy said not to complain about the rain but I’am sorry, I am screaming my complaint. Ugh!

Due to the rain and flooding all over Texas my sweet hubby Bruce and I do not feel it is safe for us to pull the Beast in all this bad weather to San Antonio for the paint out event.

“ITS NOT FAR!!! DARN RAIN!”

So we will have to spend our vacation somewhere else after the rain.

Well I really shouldn’t complain, at lease I will be with the love of my life, my hubby and we will be together.♡

Getting ready for a new adventure.

I for got to post this one.

My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted just over the hill.

As I get ready for this year new adventure in outdoor painting. I have discovered that my acrylic paints that I had store in the freezer had dried out in my containers.

So what s a girl I do?

Throw out the containers and buy new ones?

That would be the lazy way I go for me to go. So I will clean them out and reuse them again.

Once I remove the old paint from the containers I will place them in a big pot with hot water and let them soak.

This is what the water looks like.

I live in the country and I have a septic tank. So I can not put any acrylic water down my sink. So how will I get rid of the acrylic water? You can read how you can discard your discard your acrylic water.

https://iwouldliketotellyall.wordpress.com/2018/01/30/discarding-your-dirty-acrylic-water/

After I clean my containers …

I place a small amt. of clear gesso to keep my paint wet a little longer when I am using them.

Then I lay out my paints the way I would in my paint box. Now I place each color in the box container and mix well.

Now I got a nice containers full of clean bright colors to paint with.

Sorry I have not posted in a while.

And I am sorry to say that this post is a little late coming out.

But once you read it you will understand.

————————————————

With summer in Texas it is just to hot to paint outdoors, at lease for me.

Now if I was back in Southern California I could go up in the mountain or to the beach to cool off and paint. But I am not there, I am here living in North Texas and the OPS (Outdoor Painters Society) is gearing up for their fall paint-outs and they are going to be painting in the Hill Country of Texas at Enchanted Rock State Park on Thursday , Llano on Friday and Castell Saturday this Sept 15,16, 17.

Now I had sign up for this paint-out back in Jan 2017.

But just recently I was not sure if hubby and I we’re going to be able to go to the paint out this month.

It seems that hubby was waiting to find out if our church was going to have other camp out this month. But it seems at the last minute things change and we’re going on the pain out now.

So what seem like forever to get an answer, now I am busy cleaning the house and RV, trying to remember what I always pack every time we went out camping, trying to find all my plein air gear (it got move from the last time I went out) and I decided to make a new plein air bag for my pencils, color pencils and watercolor pencils. (quick sketch only.)

I was thinking I had plenty of canvases prepared to take with me…WRONG!!!!

When I did the Paint Historic Waxahachie paint out. I had plenty of canvases but what I didn’t use at the paint out I used in my studio.

So now I have to gesso some canvases to take with me. What was I thinking?

Now I am not worry about running up to the art store to buy more canvases.

What people don’t know about me is I am a canvas hog. I love all size of canvases.

BUT WAIT!!!

I forgot to tell my hubby to set up a reservation for a campground.

So now I’m a little stressed out at the moment.

But hubby was a real trooper. After a lot of calls to campgrounds in and around Llano, he found one that had only been open for two weeks, just built.

The RV site is called Lazy Rayzz RV Park and Buchanan Damn just 17 miles from Llano Texas.

    Now that’s a relief…

Back to packing we leave in one week.
