Birdhouse Part-1

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

Tuesday – April 11, 2023

Will once again hubby and I  got a late start this morning. I had no plans on going out to paint today but hubby was insistent so we left the house around 11:30 am (like I said it was a late morning) and we headed out to Rockett (Texas) for me to paint what I call “Birdhouse Community.”

When we got there, I was thinking that I could paint from the back of my car while hubby sat in the car and watch TV on his phone or watch DVDS on the DVD player. But I am finding out that my eyes are really bad now

and I just about had to sit on top of the birdhouses to see it. Ha Ha

As I was setting up my gear close to the birdhouse, a lady from across the street came over. Apparently, this 70 year old lady is the church watcher. What I mean by that she make should that whoever is on the Historical church grounds, they are not there to deface the church or the grounds.

This lady lives across the street, and she comes across the street to ask me what I am doing?  I told her that I was a Plein Air artist and that I wanted to paint the birdhouse. She asked me if I was going to paint “the church sign”?  I said “No the birdhouse.” she asked me two more times, and I told her again “No the birdhouse. “Finally she got it and she told me that one of the church member made that birdhouse and after 30 minutes or more of her talking, to me about the history of Rockett, how the town attracts lightning, how the lighting destroyed the Rockett High school 2x, how  we need to take sage and lemon for our health and more. She finally left, and I got to work on my  simple little birdhouse community painting.

I have decided to use my watercolor set and not worry about setting up my easel and all my supplies for my acrylic. Note: as you can see from other paintout

All I wanted to do was just play and not worry about creating that one painting that the judge might like or win.

So I sat in front of the birdhouse and started to paint, but I didn’t want to paint the big tree that was behind the birdhouse from across the street. Now I am not a watercolorist and I have a lot to learn about watercolors, so I decide to go with a loose feel but how do I do that. Hummm?

I will wet my paper and just blend the green onto the paper. No start over. Next, I re-wet the paper, and I try my hand at making blooms. While it was wet, it looked cool, but once it was dry, as you could see, I flopped.

While I was sitting there listening to nature, I found that working with watercolors ready made me think of my mixing colors, where I wanted my brush strokes, where to place my shadows, and so much more With my acrylic, I don’t think of these thing for they are now old hat to me. But watercolors are a challenge and fun.

Once I reached a point in my paint, I knew to stop. So I packed up and made sure my area was clean where I was painting and went back to the car.  Hubby and I headed back to Waxahachie for us to have an early dinner at Braum’s.

Once we got home, I decided to try and remove all that background green. I successfully did it, but I also somehow removed some of my shadows. When I go to Palmer (Texas), I will drive through Rockett and go back to the church and touch up my painting.

To be continued…

Monday – April 10, 2023

Today, I wanted to go out to Rockett, Palmer, anywhere to paint in Ellis County, but I have to depend on my sweet hubby to drive me everywhere because of my bad cataracts.

Well, he got up late this morning, and I feel that the morning is now shot. I am getting frustrated and a little depressed because I have to depend on someone else time. So today is a bust, and I have lost at least 4 to 5 days of painting so far due to weather also.

This Saturday is the DFW Urban Sketches, and they will be in my hometown, Waxahachie. We are all to meet at the downtown square. YAY!!! I want to check them out and see what they are all about. They only meet once a month in the DFW area. I think that it will make a nice day trip for hubby and me every once in a while.

In the meantime, hubby and I spent the day in the backyard, so I decided to pull out my little Linus bag (sketch bag)

so that I can draw one of the buttercup weeds that is growing wild in our backyard.

Can I be real with y’all…

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting ( Pein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

Today, I want to talk about the struggle that I am going through right now. You see, I have cataracts right now, and I can’t see.

What I mean by that is I can see color clearly, but objects, words on signs are a big blurb until I get about 100 or so feet in front of them. Scary, I know.

I have stopped driving just as safety to myself and other drivers. My sweet hubby has been my driving me around without a complaint.

Now let’s jump a head…

I have to go see my optometrist/ ophthalmologist twice a year because of my low scale diabetes to keep my eye healthy. Will at the end of last year my eye doctor (as I like to call him) said my cataracts had gotten worse and he wanted to do surgery right away.

I felt uneasy on the way he was being so pushy, so I checked with another eye doctor, and he said I was fine for another one to three years before I needed surgery. This year, I found that my eyes had gotten worse due to some meds that I had to take to help me walk.

If you have been reading my later post, I talk about being one of the co-chairs for the “Paint Historic Waxahachie Event.” Hubby and I scouted all the towns and cities in Ellis County of where the artist can go and paint this year for the Pre-Paint event.

Now, my new optometrist/ ophthalmologist wants to operate on my cataracts at the end of March.

But here is my dilemma… on April 1-29 is the Pre-Paint Historic Waxahachie Event, May 5-17 is the actual event. And we added a Quick Draw Event on May 20th so that the artist can paint or draw anywhere around the square.

Do I go ahead and have the surgery sometime in April (I lost the appointment in March), loss the money that I paid for this event? Plus, in mid-April, the Outdoor Painters Society will be in town to paint their event, which I have signed up for, too.

What’s that old saying? “You can kill two birds with one stone.” Well, that is what I am trying to do.

But to tell the truth, my eyes are tired, and at times, they hurt, but I am an artist, and I have been looking forward to this event since last year. Unfortunately, last year, I struggled with severe allergies and being unstable in my walking. (Note: I can walk like everyone else now but still have allergies 🤧)

I want so badly to do this event, but I am afraid that it could turn out to be fastrating.

What would you do? Would you take a chance and participate in the event or go for the surgery? Let me know what you think, and thank you for letting me be real with my dilemma.

—————————————–

Well it has been a while since I blog or even Plein Air this year. To make a long story short, in 2019 I fell into some health problems ( if you go back to HOT, HOT, HOT, post you will see me in a wheelchair but I am happy to say that I am out of that chair and ready to get back to painting again.

The Outdoor Painters Society (this will be my last fair well time with them.

But I will keep going out when I can to paint on my own) will be back in Glen Rose, Texas again in November.

I have sign up to go paint with the group again. Or I should say I hope so.

You see every time I sign up to go paint with the Outdoor Painters Society something always happen to trip me up, and this time is no different. You see I made a reservation with a RV Park in Glen Rose to bring my 5th Wheel out to their campground. But about two weeks later I got a call that the campground was going to have to cancel my reservation because they have a crew that is there to clean a local power plant that is on shutdown right now and the power plant will not be going back up until a week after I was gone. 🙄

What is an artist to do?

To tell the truth I was so fed up I just waned to throw in the towel. But that’s not me so the next day I cancel my plans to go paint so I could hunt for a new campground.        After a long day of looking I found a new campground and now I am set to go to Glen Rose and paint with the group.

But first I need to go through my plein air bag and make sure I have everything that I need (It seem that most of my supplies are a little scatter around the house.)

Plus this time I am going to bring with me something new. I have been playing with watercolors lately and I want to try my hand with them outdoors but first I need to put together a plein air bag for them.

Well I guess I better start early in getting my RV ready too.

Until next time my friends. Keep creating and God Bless.

Amarillo Texas in October

———————————————

I am late posting this only because I was in pain and I did not want to sound negative while typing this. I really do love being out outdoors painting. So here goes…

I had signed up to go out on a paint out with the OPS group to Amarillo, Texas. I have been wanting to go and see the Palo Duro Canyon State Park for a while now.

We had to register with the park early so that we could get in. (the state park is only allowing so many people into the park daily due to the Corona virus)

Will as some of y’all know I’m still covering from the medicine that the doctor had me on that damage my legs and arms. Well after I sign up for the paint out I started to get my art gear ready and set it aside.

Now it was a week before hubby, and I was to leave (I can’t drive due to my illness so my hubby dose the driving for me). I had started to help pack our bags but now I am having second thoughts because I over guess my abilities.

    Have I jumped the gun?
Can I paint outdoors and get to the best location?

I am finding that it hard for me to move around to get the clothes, bathroom supplies and a few snacks to take with us along the way.     I am how questioning my decision on going on this trip but I am keeping quite because I don’t want hubby to loss his points that he put down on the hotel room for us.

Now it was the day we where to leave, hubby pack up my car and off we went.We had only reach Fort Worth when my back and legs started to hurt and I still had other 5 hours to go.

Heaven help me!!!

We made it to Amarillo, Texas none too soon.  By that night I was in so much pain that when hubby help put me to bed I cry because of the pain.

Why am I telling y’all this? If you are a plein air artist or like me just love to be outdoors and you got sick or injured, please don’t jump the gun and take a long trip like I did. Test the water first by going out to your local town to paint to see how you do first.

Now it is the next day and we are going to drive to Palo Duro Canyon State Park where the plein air artist are to paint.

So we left the canyon and drove back to the hotel for me to rest.

The next morning hubby and I went to meet a artist friend and her hubby for breakfast. After alot of laughing, talking and just having a great time four hours had past and it was time for lunch and for us to say our good-bye (*n*)

So I decided to draw it but as you can see I did not get to far because it was to cold and windy for me. So we left and headed back to the hotel.

Our last day on the trip I just gave up trying to plein air due to the pain in my legs and I spend ours last day exploring Amarillo. YAY!

Sunday we got up to head home and I have to say I will not try to make that long drive again. When I plein air it be close to home.

Now to rethink my next outdoor trip.

    Hummm???

In my home town there is a building or two that I have been wanting to paint so I will test the waters with that, stay tune…

Today adventure is the little town call Llano, Texas

I my plan was to spend the hold day painting but hubby was with me and I wanted to give him time to sight see as I explore to find places to paint.

We first went to the Whimseys Museum, then to the Llano Red Top Jail which is a historical site, Llano Country Courthouse other historical site, Llano River, Lantex Theater which was built in 1927 and we had to stop by Calamity and Grace which the lady to the museum told us to stop by and check out her shop and say hi.

At Calamity and Grace art shop and Gallery.

I was told about a form of art call “Earth Art” that they hold every year.

I could not resist buying this cute little 3 cat earth art painting. This painting is made out of rocks and twig from a tree. from what I was told all earth art has to be made from nature as in the the cast of this painting.

As we went back to look at the Historical Red Top Jail again I told hubby that the jail would be a challenge to paint or draw but I don’t think he like the idea for he never answer me and took off driving again.  So I had him take me to residential street call 800 Hickory.

There at the end of the cul-de-sac we come to a big oak tree were someone make a tree house.

Again I felt funny about painting, like I could not paint. So I pull out my drawing pad and ink pens and I stay in the truck with hubby where it was cool. For it was really hot outside and I believe it was a 100 or more.

From there we went down to the old train track where they have an old caboose park in front of some restaurants. This is the original train track that they kept as a historical site.

 I drew that one too.

From there we drove around the Llano River and enjoy the view and from there we came back onto the square but now it is midday and hotter then blazes. I wanted to draw a quick sketch of the Lantex Theater. And I do mean quick for it was hot! About 100 that day.

We decided to go back to the RV but not before he took me to see other art gallery.

Paint Historic Waxahachie 1- of 1

My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

May 5 starts the kick off of the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event but I was out of town at a camp out which was a blast.

On Monday morning was other story, I had to drag my behind out of bed and went to the gallery to register for the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event but I so tired  from the camping trip that I wanted to go home and back to bed.

The weatherman said that we are to get some rain Wed – Thur but today is nice so I figure I would make my self get out and paint but what???

I know I don’t want to paint the old square for everybody and their brother has painted that this past few days.

So I thought about the Firehouse Barber Shop where my hubby gets his hair cuts but when I park across the street at the old abandoned building, the next door neighbor dog started barking and would not stop. So I moved across the street to the barbershop but couldn’t find the right angle to paint.

So I abandoned that idea and drove down the street to the Getzendaner Memorial Park.

There is a big plain building that is a historic site. No thank you…

When I pull in I saw another artist out there painting who is like me, a landscape artist ( I know, I know, I said I was going to challenge my self with painting building, houses and logo. And I still am, I just need something to kick start my self) and she was just wrapping it up her painting.

We talk for a few and when I looked to my left I saw this big gnarly tree just twisted and it was just beautiful in my eyes. So I told her I was going go get my car and park there so I could paint the tree when two busloads of field trip children and a convoy of parents came in and started parking around where we were. I told the artist that I was going to my car and I would pull into her working spot so I could paint the tree.

When I went back to my car and got in it I saw for the first time the tree that I was park in front of. It was the most beautiful knotted, gnarly lumpy tree and I didn’t even see it when I park. That’s how tired I was, so my plan is to go back this week or later and paint it.

Once I park and set up I began to paint. It became over cast then sunny then cover cast again.

Now if you think I choose to paint at the park to get away from folks you are wrong. That park is the most busiest park I have been out at.

Folks did stop by to see what I was painting and we chit chat, folks drove by several times in their car trying to get a sneak peek of what I was painting. I just giggle inside.

Here is the completed painting. I had to take this pic from my easel for y’all to see it more clearly.

This is an acrylic painting on a 8″ x 10″ stretch canvas.

I will start placing all my Plein Air Painting on my website 05/ 20/ that has not sold. http://www.creationsbyjdfields.net

Yesterday was a busy day with working the back room of the gallery, registering artist in for the event and I helping artist get their paintings hung for the show. By the time I got off around 12:30 pm the parking lot was fill with cars so I could not paint the Doves Nest- gift shop and restaurant.

O.K. Not a problem for I have a lot of places to paint but I do need to get home a little early too.

So to make a long boring story short, I found this little lonely tree standing all alone and I decided that I was going to paint it but I was going to paint it in a different style than I normally would paint it just to change things up.

This is a Acrylic painting on a  4″x 12″ box canvas
