Saying goodbye to an old friend.

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always an interesting things to be discovered and painted.

—————————————————————————————————

This week I was going to a group meeting in Maypearl (Texas).

Hubby drops me off and decided to go into town to check on the old Claunch Barn to see if they had cut down the grass, so he could take me down there to do a quick drawing. When he came back to pick me up, I got the sad news.

I remember two years ago when I had just started to walk again. (Note: Before Covid, I had taken cholesterol medicine with statin, and it paralyzed me in a short time.) My hubby had to drive to Southern California to be by his mom and dad side for his mom upcoming surgery.

My son, who was my caregiver at the time, had decided that while his dad was away, I needed to get behind the wheel again and try to drive a few miles to see how much I could drive.

Me: Hell Yes!!!

So I had my son help me in the car, and we headed to old Maypearl about 9 miles away. What an adventure…

As I slowly drove around the neighborhood in Maypearl, I came across this old lovely barn.

I could not wait to get home to tell the Tuesday Paint Club the treasure that I found for us to paint.

As I continued to heal that year, the plein air “Paint Historic Waxahachie Event” was coming up, but hubby was not going to let me drive myself just yet. (Boy, was he mad when he found out that I drove), and I was not sure if I was going to be able to participate in the event since I was still in a wheelchair and having problems holding up my arms to paint. But I figure what the hell let’s just go for it.

We as a group were so excited to paint the old Claunch Barn, which we found out that day was 100+ years old.

That day, I did try to paint the old girl as you can see, I did have a hard time trying to hold my arm up to paint. But I did have fun just being out with the group.

Later on that year, I went back to paint the old the old gate and the fence line.

The following year, I started to drive again, and I loved going down to that old beautiful barn and sitting in the quiet space listening to the birds. So last year I decided to take my time and draw the old barn. Little did I know it would be the last time I would enjoy her beauty. Because she is gone now.

But I am getting a head of myself.

When the plein air show was going on two years ago I did talk to some of the Maypearl residents that told me that two brothers, one brother, wanted to keep the old barns as is, and the other brother wanted to demolish both barns so that he could build on the land. This met that the two men have been going to court for a few years now, but the one brother who wanted to demolish the two barns won the case this year.

Those beautiful 100 + year old barns are now gone, and they will only live in our drawing and canvases now. 😭

Until next time, my friends keep creating and God bless y’all.

Part – 6 of Paint Historic Waxahachie Plein Air Event 2022

Welcome to My Crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

This is my last post of this year 2022 Paint Historic Waxahachie Event.

I debated which blog site to post this on so I will post it on both. This one and https://whatsonjdeasel.wordpress.com/

You might be asking yourself why?

Will I’m glad you ask?

A group of gals who participated in the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event decided to paint in their medium i.e.: Watercolor, Oils, Inks, etc. of the old College Street Printing Co. Building. But I decided to draw it.

As you see here, I had started this drawing in the pre-paint event. But decided to hold off so I could have something for the actual downtown event.

Well, it seems later on that it was not going to happen for this drawing. We only had one week to paint downtown (which is plenty of time for most plein air artist) but for some reason (I can only speak for me) I felt like I was under pressure. Like I did not have enough time to paint what I wanted too.

So, when it can down the wire, I had to made a hard decision. Stop where I am at and complete it in the studio? This meant I could not place it in the Paint Historic Waxahachie show.

It was a really hard decision but I held back on the drawing and submitted a painting that I had completed.

After the show was over and I started to put my house back in order I went to the easel to complete my drawing as you can see here.

Note: This is what it looks like after I spayed it so that the drawing cannot get smug. They always come out a little darker than what ya plan. And that’s OK with me for I always draw it a little lighter so that when I spay, it usually comes out the way I want it.

What do you think about this drawing? Would you have tempted to push through and complete it for the show?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time my friends God Bless.

Remember I told you about the Waxahachie Historical Society “Saves these Places” and I went through the list and choose two places to try my hand at ?

Well my second choice was the Historic Getzendaner Park with its 100 to 300 year Old Oak Trees. I love this park. It is so peaceful with those Majestic Oak Trees on the property. They are just lovely to look at and study.

As hubby and I drove around the park we could not decide on which tree for me to paint. After the third time around the park we both agree on this old twist oak tree.

So we park and I start to set up. But then it hits me… Hummmm? It has been since last year that I use a pallette knife to paint with. But I want to give this lovely oak tree a good amt of texture and the only way to do that was with my trusty pallette knife. So I dove in…

Boy am I rusty with my pallette knife. LOL But I am also having a ball siting under the tree, listening to the birds, seeing the children  chase the squirrels and just enjoy a pleasant Sunday afternoon at the park.

Will as y’all can see from my painting that I am now in full sun and my arms are getting a little sunburn. The umbrella that I brought is a small one that attaches to my chair. I should have brought my big boy umbrella. That one will cover me, my chair and my easel.

As I am painting I am finding that the bugs and nats are getting stuck in my painting, the ants are falling from the tree onto my wet paint and the salt on my arms is attracting some kind of critter.     But all is good.

I need to stop right now and come back tomorrow because I just can’t get my shadow in. It seem that I need to let the paint on my canvas dry so I can 1. Make corrections 2. Add the darks and shadows in were I want them.

Well the next day we came back at the same time of day and I made my corrections and shadow changes as y’all can see in the photo of my hubby holding up the painting.

—————————————————-

Now that Paint Historic Waxahachie Event had kick off and we got our list to participate in the Waxahachie Historical Society “Saves these Places” I went through the list and choose two places I wanted to try my hand at.

Now I love to paint landscapes, old Trees, a memory of time pass, really anything that is old, but I need to step up my game and start painting old Historic Landmark, building and homes. So I decided to try my hand at the Henry Curry Baseball Field.

This is the scene that I want to paint.

But this time I was going to have to paint in my car due to the weather. I also knew hubby would not be a happy camper with me using my Acrylics in my car. You see it can get really messy.

So I opted to use my watercolor pencils just like I did for the Texas State Flower (Bluebonnets). You can read about it here https://mypleinairadventuresblog.wordpress.com/2022/05/31/paint-historic-waxahachie-plein-air-event-2022-part-2/

But as you can see here it was not working for me this time like it did with the the State Flower. Beside little did we know that there was going to be a little league game going on that day.🤔 So this is how far I got before folks starting parking around us and my view was taken away. 😥

We noticed that some of the folks were parking in the handicap area and they were not even handicap. Shame on them!!! I am handicap and still have to use a walker when I am out and about. I felt so bad for the folks who are handicap. They had no where to park that day.

So hubby as me to pack it up so that he could give up his spot and we decided to came back on a weekday next week.

The following week we went back to the site and I knew that my color pencils was not going to work for me. So I decided to try my hand with some watercolors and just play for once and not worry about trying to create a painting that the judge would like and try to win an ward on.

Well wouldn’t you know it other game. 😲 But I did manage to get this far with this painting and decided to move to other place to paint. But that will be for other blog…

This I title: “Let’s Play Ball” this will be hanging at the gallery Art on the Square, 113 W. Franklin St, Waxahachie, Texas.

Do you work in Watercolor? What Watercolor brand do you use?

My next painting is from the Pre-Paint Historic Waxahachie Event. I have been always interested in what my husband call “The Hanging Tree”.

Just before I decide to paint this painting hubby was talking to our neighbor in the back and he told us the history of this local tree that we see every day from our back yard. It seems that a couple of years before we move into our new home (we bought our house in 2015) a Tornado had touch down about a half a mile or so and cut across my back yard and through the two neighbors yards also before hitting this wall of trees and cutting across the farmers field. As you can see it was a small tornado for it remove the leaves from that one tree but sadly to say it never grew back again.

Here you can see that I had started the painting (in Acrylic) but I was having a hard time trying to paint with watery eyes and a running nose. Sorry for that gross picture 😵‍💫 (I also just found out last month that I have moderate cataracts too.) I was ready to trash this one in the burn pile but after a couple of days of rest I went back to it to see if I would salvage it and this is what I came up with…

In my head I could see some wild flowers and weeds but when I did added them in it through the hold painting off its kilter. So I remove it. I was every discourage with this painting but I am not ready to give up or throw in the towel. Will see with the next painting will bring.

I have read and have been told that you will paint 100+ Plein air paintings that come out bad before you will come home with one good one. Well if that is the case that I am on my way. Ha Ha

I’am calling this one “A Different View”. This will be hanging at the gallery Art on the Square, 113 W. Franklin St, Waxahachie, Texas. until the end of July.

——————————————————

Note: You will find that a lot of artist who post or blog like this one will write about how great things are or look at what a great painting I created. ( No offense to these artist or bloggers by any means or ways.) But I want to show y’all that we are artist do have bad days and bad paintings. We are only human.

There are day I do want to throw in the towel and give up Plein Air but there is something about being out side in nature that pulls on the artist soul…

But I will blog about all of that at a later date.

If you have any questions about the up and downs of Plein air, how and where to start, etc. Just leave me a comment and I will be happy to answer any and all of your questions. How knows it just might be apart of my blog.

——————————————————–

May 5 starts the kick off of the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event but I was out of town at a camp out which was a blast.

On Monday morning was other story, I had to drag my behind out of bed and went to the gallery to register for the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event but I so tired  from the camping trip that I wanted to go home and back to bed.

The weatherman said that we are to get some rain Wed – Thur but today is nice so I figure I would make my self get out and paint but what???

I know I don’t want to paint the old square for everybody and their brother has painted that this past few days.

So I thought about the Firehouse Barber Shop where my hubby gets his hair cuts but when I park across the street at the old abandoned building, the next door neighbor dog started barking and would not stop. So I moved across the street to the barbershop but couldn’t find the right angle to paint.

So I abandoned that idea and drove down the street to the Getzendaner Memorial Park.

There is a big plain building that is a historic site. No thank you…

When I pull in I saw another artist out there painting who is like me, a landscape artist ( I know, I know, I said I was going to challenge my self with painting building, houses and logo. And I still am, I just need something to kick start my self) and she was just wrapping it up her painting.

We talk for a few and when I looked to my left I saw this big gnarly tree just twisted and it was just beautiful in my eyes. So I told her I was going go get my car and park there so I could paint the tree when two busloads of field trip children and a convoy of parents came in and started parking around where we were. I told the artist that I was going to my car and I would pull into her working spot so I could paint the tree.

When I went back to my car and got in it I saw for the first time the tree that I was park in front of. It was the most beautiful knotted, gnarly lumpy tree and I didn’t even see it when I park. That’s how tired I was, so my plan is to go back this week or later and paint it.

Once I park and set up I began to paint. It became over cast then sunny then cover cast again.

Now if you think I choose to paint at the park to get away from folks you are wrong. That park is the most busiest park I have been out at.

Folks did stop by to see what I was painting and we chit chat, folks drove by several times in their car trying to get a sneak peek of what I was painting. I just giggle inside.

Here is the completed painting. I had to take this pic from my easel for y’all to see it more clearly.

This is an acrylic painting on a 8″ x 10″ stretch canvas.

I will start placing all my Plein Air Painting on my website 05/ 20/ that has not sold. http://www.creationsbyjdfields.net

Yesterday was a busy day with working the back room of the gallery, registering artist in for the event and I helping artist get their paintings hung for the show. By the time I got off around 12:30 pm the parking lot was fill with cars so I could not paint the Doves Nest- gift shop and restaurant.

O.K. Not a problem for I have a lot of places to paint but I do need to get home a little early too.

So to make a long boring story short, I found this little lonely tree standing all alone and I decided that I was going to paint it but I was going to paint it in a different style than I normally would paint it just to change things up.

This is a Acrylic painting on a  4″x 12″ box canvas

PAINT HISTORIC WAXAHACHIE

FullSizeRender (16)

My Adventure Plein Air

I am going to try to write about my adventure in the Paint Historic Waxahachie event in North Texas that was in May of this year but please forgive me if I post this a little late. I have a temporary (I hope) frozen shoulder. I had this since Feb of this year so I am slow at typing now.

Well here goes…The 11 year of Paint Historic Waxahachie stared May 14-20, 2016 but if you sign up early you got to participate in the Pre – Paint Historic Waxahachie which I always sign up for.

This started April 29th and wouldn’t you  know it, it rain and rain most of the month of May too. YUCK!!

I was not sure if I would be able to paint due to my shoulder but the need to paint was greater than my pain so I jump in with both feet.

I started off with this  little  8″x 10″ palette knife gem of the Red Door.

0502161640b_resized.jpg

I am fascinated with this red door so I figure I would start with this painting.

—————————————————————————————

This paint is a 11″ x 14″ Palette knife on canvas board with linen.

One day I was coming home from church and decide to take other route when I came across these three cactuses. They were so grand there next to the old wood fence that I knew I had to paint them.

A few days later I went back to paint what I call the Three Caballeros. It was one of the few nice sunny days  that we had and I decide not to paint in my car to avoid the looky loo but I set up beside my car and painted.

What a brake though I had doing that. I was a little nerves having folks looking at me and my painting but I am a artist and if I want folks to see my work what better why that to paint outdoors.

From this point on I will only paint in my car when it is raining or their is not room/ not allow to paint in the area.

——————————————————————————————

Next is this signage on a old brick building in Maypearl, Tx

It was other sunny day and I wanted to try my hand again at painting this signage so I went out with all my gear and set up next to my car and with my palette knife and brush I recreated this signage on a 11″ x 14″ canvas board.

———————————————————————————————

This painting was done on a warm cloudy but windy Saturday morning .

My husband was off work that day and we like to spend his days off together. So  with a little coaching I got him to take me to Lake Waxahachie to paint for 30 min’s before we started out our day.

Again I set up next to my car so I could talk to my hubby and use my car as a wind barricader.

This is a little brush and palette knife painting that I did on a 5″ x 7″ canvas board.

———————————————————————————————

Later on that day as we where pulling up in our driveway, hubby got a call from his work that he need to go out on an emergency pump out. So as he left I told him that I would be at home waiting for him with a smile on my face but in the back of my mind I was thinking of taking this opportunity to get out and paint one more painting since I was not happy with the earlier painting and besides the sun had finally came out.

After hubby left I took off but did not know what to paint so in a few min’s I was on a road. Before I knew it I saw these trees as I was going around the bend for a farm road. I pull over and this time I did have to paint in my car only because there was know place for me to set up outside.

As I was wrapping up the painting, hubby called to tell me that he was done and on his way home. We talked for a few min’s and he told me that all he need to do was tighten up a pipe.

Will I never painted so fast and pack up. I came home, clean up and about 10 min’s later hubby walks through the back door and said “Are you ready to go have dinner with me”? So glad I got home in time but even happier that I got to paint a 2nd painting too.

This is a 8″x 10″ brush painting on canvas board.

A few days had pass due to the rain when the sun was out and I had volunteer to set in the gallery to check in artist and such that day. After my shift was over I went driving around to see what I could find to paint. I drove around an old neighborhood in Waxahachie  when I came across these Beautiful Morning Glory climbing up a wooden fences. Well again I thought I was going to have to paint in my car but after talking to the home owners they allowed me to paint in their small driveway under a big old shaded tree. It was nice.

This is a 8″x 10″ Palette Knife and brush painting on a canvas board.

After painting the Beautiful Morning Glory I want to paint the Texas clouds after a rainy day so when I got home I set up my easel on the front porch of my house and began to paint fast for the clouds out in Texas move every fast.

This is one of the views that I see every day out in front of my front yard. I try to capture it on a 5″ x 7″ canvas board.

The day before the big Paint Historic Waxahachie show I still wanted to paint some more cactus but because it was raining with thunder and lighting that day I decide to paint my son Quadricolor Cactus in the safety of my back patio but I wanted to make it fast for I don’t trust lighting.

This is the smallest palette knife paintin I did on a  3-1/2″x 5″on Masonite board. I also glue it onto the back of a 5″ x 7″ canvas board and frame it with a custom barn wood frame.
