Glen Rose -2

Welcome to My Crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

I thought about writing my experience in Glen Rose but I decided to do a video instead.

—————————————–

Well it has been a while since I blog or even Plein Air this year. To make a long story short, in 2019 I fell into some health problems ( if you go back to HOT, HOT, HOT, post you will see me in a wheelchair but I am happy to say that I am out of that chair and ready to get back to painting again.

The Outdoor Painters Society (this will be my last fair well time with them.

But I will keep going out when I can to paint on my own) will be back in Glen Rose, Texas again in November.

I have sign up to go paint with the group again. Or I should say I hope so.

You see every time I sign up to go paint with the Outdoor Painters Society something always happen to trip me up, and this time is no different. You see I made a reservation with a RV Park in Glen Rose to bring my 5th Wheel out to their campground. But about two weeks later I got a call that the campground was going to have to cancel my reservation because they have a crew that is there to clean a local power plant that is on shutdown right now and the power plant will not be going back up until a week after I was gone. 🙄

What is an artist to do?

To tell the truth I was so fed up I just waned to throw in the towel. But that’s not me so the next day I cancel my plans to go paint so I could hunt for a new campground.        After a long day of looking I found a new campground and now I am set to go to Glen Rose and paint with the group.

But first I need to go through my plein air bag and make sure I have everything that I need (It seem that most of my supplies are a little scatter around the house.)

Plus this time I am going to bring with me something new. I have been playing with watercolors lately and I want to try my hand with them outdoors but first I need to put together a plein air bag for them.

Well I guess I better start early in getting my RV ready too.

I totally forgot to post this one. Well better late then sorry.

Enjoy

On Friday and Saturday January 26 & 27, 2018 I went with OPS (Outdoor Painter Society) to Glen Rose, Texas.

Saturday January 26,

I got up and drove to Glen Rose and I must say it was cold, cold, cold all day into the weekend. As I was driving into Glen Rose I HIT some light fog and then a little bit of rain. But when I got to Big Rock Park the fog had lifted and I saw some painters painting but it was too cold and windy for me to paint by the river. So I drove to Heritage Center Park to see what to paint out there. I found a really cute historical house on the park grounds.

So I got out of my car to set up my pants. Boy was it cold!!!!

I started to place the bones of the building (house) when I had to pack up and go meet the OPS group for lunch at the Green Pickle.

When I walked into the building I saw old friends and met new artist too. After lunch I went back to where I was painting and reset up my gear. The only difference was I was alone any more. In the beginning it was just me all alone but now other artists decide to come and join me and paint at the same location as I was at.

Then my inner critic in my head started telling me that I am not good enough to paint with them. Your painting will look bad, they work in juices oils and you work in dull acrylic.

Well I shut her up and I drove in and painted.

I finish my house as far as I can. I will need to take the painting
into my studio to wrap it up.

When I left Glen Rose it was 5:30 p.m. and I have an hour and a half drive ahead of me. The problem is I get night blind. Lord knows I should have left earlier but I was standing around running mu mouth, talking and laughing other artists. Just having a great time.

Well when I left I still had some day light but not for long… It was the most scariest time on the road for me. Those long country roads are black and at times with oncoming traffic coming at me I could not see.

I thank God for getting me home safely.

Saturday January 27, 2018

The next day I drove back to Glen Rose but today I will leave earlier so I can get home while it is still light.

I drove down to Barnard’s Mills Museum to paint where the workers used to store the cotton seeds in the silo.

I set up my easel to do a palette knife painting of the Silo, but when you are painting outdoors you never know how things are going to turn out. The weather was still cold and as I stood there placing paint to canvas I found out that no matter what I did, it was not working out.

So I scraped it all off to start over again. Once again I started to paint and once again I flopped.

So I ditched the canvas and tried to paint this old rustic bell that sat on a old wooden post but once again I was stumped, no pun intended.

Just could not get my colors to work for me. (later I found that my sugar was really low and I just would not think straight So I once again ditched the canvas and decided to just draw.

This is that same old rustic bill that I drew with a ink pen.

Next I added some color to my drawing

Once I was done drawing and coloring the bell I was determined to create that silo, be it as a painting or a drawing and the drawing won.

Here I added some color to my drawing

Just I finish my drawing some artist can by to try there hand at painting the silo some did like me and draw it. I have found that I love to draw outdoors with a dry medium. it is so freeing.

It must have been around 3:30 p.m. when I told everyone I was not able to stay for the show and tell plus dinner. So I said my Good By and I drove home safely with plenty of sunlight.

Thank you God!!
