It’s to hot to camp!!!

Welcome to My Crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

—————————————————–

Will hubby and I just got back from a nice little vacation at Airport Park in Waco, Texas.

Once we got there I had plan on going out by the lake to do some quick watercolor sketches but I have to a meant that it was just to hot and humid for me to be out there in that kind of heat (Three digits and high humidity.) I did try & sit out there for a bit but the medicine that the doctor has me on for my legs, (still trying to bring my KC leaves down so that I can walk on my own with no devices inside & outside,) will let just say that summer weather plus humidity dose not mix with my new medication. I got sick for a while.

Now I know I could have painted from my dining room window but that just not what I wanted to do. I wanted to be outdoors in nature. But then it hit me that while hubby and I had been packing up the Beast (our 43 foot 5th Wheel, I had told him that I was going to leave my laptop at home, no blogging, only popping in once in a while for 20 mins on FB & IG, and definitely no working on my art business. I was going to read a couple of books, catch up on some emails paint and relax.

But what I did not realize was I was not going outside to just play (paint) but I was going to paint and make it into work. I was going to video my self on my phone outdoors talking about what I was painting and how to paint it for my up and coming Patreon page that i will post soon. Now that’s work!!!

I realize I was not going to rest but work. So I had to pull back the reins on my self and stop. What I found out is that I really did need the rest. Sometime we need to stop and unwind, smell the roses as they say, step back, slow down and really look at nature. God create this beautiful planet with all it wonders if we only take the time to look.

As I stop to breathe I remember an email that I receive (just like hundreds of other folks did) and I want to share it with y’all. This is a blog from Artist Turner Vinson that I think y’all will enjoy.

Q & A

Who is this gal name J.D. Fields

🎨 My name is J.D. Fields and I love to draw and paint nature.

🎨 I was born in Southern California but I’m a two-time transplanted to Texas which I now call home.

🎨 I married my best friend and soul mate in 1998.

🎨 My husband has three children, two boy and a girl and I have one girl and two boys. When we got married, we put them altogether and call us all family

🎨 I am acrylic artist but I am starting to teach my self-watercolor painting.  I try to draw several times a week also

🎨 When did I start learning to draw? I can remember being two and half years old laying on my grandma kitchen floor trying to draw the animal on her land.

🎨 Growing up I have been able to explored many different medium – Fabric Art, Crocheting, Oil Paint, Pen & Ink Painting and Color Pencils, Charcoal and Graphite Pencil.

🎨 Do you sell your work? Yes, I sell my originals, Painting, drawing and greeting cards online and in galleries.

🎨 Do you teach classes? Yes, I teach Acrylic for Beginner’s workshop to adult. I also teach drawing and Acrylics for teens.

🎨 Back in the early 2000 I had wanted to try my hand in plein air.      In July 2013 I took the plug and never look back.

🎨 Whether I’m in my studio or outdoors I am still learning to draw upon those early influences in a way that I look at life, the subject I chooses and the matter in which I paints.

Note: My apologies to everyone who is reading this. I am late posting this blog but I feel that it would still be worth reading.

Now that the Paint Historic Waxahachie Event has been over since May I had plans to continue to go out and Plein air…

So I started in my back yard with my Texas Bluebonnets Wild Flowers. But this time instead of painting I wanted to just draw with my color pens. Here is my simple drawing.

I had plan on getting out there to paint but then the Texas summer came in early and before I knew it we are hit with extreme heat and drought.

So now I am between a rock and a hard place. I just found out that I have cataracts in both eyes but worst in my right eye. Plus since I got sick back in 2019 I can’t tolerate the heat now.

So what is a gal to do?

As I was watch some YouTube videos I came across Sarah Burns of Sarah Burns Studio and I want to share her take on the 30 Day OutDoor Painting Challenge. (this was in April)

This has given me renew hope in how I can keep up with outdoor painting while taking off the pressure of creating paintings all the time. I love this idea.

30 Day Outdoor Painting Challenge

So after watching her video I created a little drawing bag that my hubby likes to call my “Linus Bag”. (If you ever watch the Peanuts than you know Linus always carry his blanket ever where he went.)

Here I have converted a bible book bag that I had laying around the house for years and have place my 5×7 sketch book, a variety of color writing pens in a pencils notebook bag, a tissue that I can use to wipe my writing pens with, a face make, a set of drawing pencils with an eraser, a little pink container that holds a rule, pencils sharpener, black pen, a small paintings brush to wipe away any crumbs from my eraser, two bandaid and two granola bars ( I am a diabetic) and business cards plus some odds and ends.

This little art bag that I created goes with me everywhere I go. And when I see something that I want to draw I don’t have to worry about looking for something to draw on or having to go back at a later time (this usually never happen for me) for I have my little handy art bag.

Here is a plein air drawing that I did while waiting for my hubby while he took care of business on his truck. As I sat in the car I decided to draw these trees in pen. So glad I had my little Linus Bag with me so that I could capture the moment.

HOT, HOT, HOT

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimesit is found by climbingover a few fences to get to unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting thingsto be discovered and paint.

——————————————

It has been a while since I been outdoors painting. But I had found out that having to use a wheelchair or walker to paint is not as easy as folks think.

But I have to say I am etching to get outdoors right now to paint but with record-breaking heat across much of the U.S., I am finding it all most impossible right now.

So what is an artist to do?

Will I am thinking of taking my watercolors outdoors and paint in my car. Or I could do the same thing with my pencil and pen. Just don’t know yet.

But what I do know is during the 2020 shut down, I became so ill that I was paralyze and did not think I was ever going to ever recover.

Will in 2021 I did beat the odds with faith and family but that dose not mean I am fully recover. I still have to rely on walker at times and my hubby to drive me any where over 15 to 20  miles. But give me time and I will be running a race. NOT!!!  But will be back to my old self again. (*u*)

So while I was volunteering at the little gallery in Waxahachie, Texas call Art on the Square I was talking to my friend and plein air artist Karla…

We were talking about how hot it is and what we can do to paint outdoors. We came up with few ideas.

Here are a few:

1. Can go sit outside in your garden to paint. Spoiler alert, I have pasture land. I have a little over an acre of land which I am not allowed to put animals on it because of the neighborhood now, HOA down the street …I only have one medium tree and one small tree plus a shed. Not much to look at.

2. Could take some photos into the studio to practice plein air by setting up a timer (this is to simulate the changing of shadows to paint) This is a thought.

3. Could sit under the front or back patio and paint the sunrise or sunset, the different color clouds, or your neighbors houses.

4. Could set up items on a garden table and paint that.

5. Could sit in a coffee shop by a window and paint with watercolor what is outside or the interior/people.

This gave us both food for thought to keep in practice until it gets cooler. But to tell the truth I can’t wait for  October when the tree start to change color but the wind is a pain with acrylics. But that’s the challenge you take with acrylics when you plein air.

So until the next time I am out and around Ellis County painting, stop by and say Howdy. I will be the one using my walker or wheel chair as a seat to paint.
