That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always an interesting things to be discovered and painted.

This week I was going to a group meeting in Maypearl (Texas).
Hubby drops me off and decided to go into town to check on the old Claunch Barn to see if they had cut down the grass, so he could take me down there to do a quick drawing. When he came back to pick me up, I got the sad news.
I remember two years ago when I had just started to walk again. (Note: Before Covid, I had taken cholesterol medicine with statin, and it paralyzed me in a short time.) My hubby had to drive to Southern California to be by his mom and dad side for his mom upcoming surgery.
My son, who was my caregiver at the time, had decided that while his dad was away, I needed to get behind the wheel again and try to drive a few miles to see how much I could drive.
Me: Hell Yes!!!
So I had my son help me in the car, and we headed to old Maypearl about 9 miles away. What an adventure…
As I slowly drove around the neighborhood in Maypearl, I came across this old lovely barn.
I could not wait to get home to tell the Tuesday Paint Club the treasure that I found for us to paint.
As I continued to heal that year, the plein air “Paint Historic Waxahachie Event” was coming up, but hubby was not going to let me drive myself just yet. (Boy, was he mad when he found out that I drove), and I was not sure if I was going to be able to participate in the event since I was still in a wheelchair and having problems holding up my arms to paint. But I figure what the hell let’s just go for it.
We as a group were so excited to paint the old Claunch Barn, which we found out that day was 100+ years old.
That day, I did try to paint the old girl as you can see, I did have a hard time trying to hold my arm up to paint. But I did have fun just being out with the group.
Later on that year, I went back to paint the old the old gate and the fence line.
The following year, I started to drive again, and I loved going down to that old beautiful barn and sitting in the quiet space listening to the birds. So last year I decided to take my time and draw the old barn. Little did I know it would be the last time I would enjoy her beauty. Because she is gone now.
But I am getting a head of myself.
When the plein air show was going on two years ago I did talk to some of the Maypearl residents that told me that two brothers, one brother, wanted to keep the old barns as is, and the other brother wanted to demolish both barns so that he could build on the land. This met that the two men have been going to court for a few years now, but the one brother who wanted to demolish the two barns won the case this year.
Those beautiful 100 + year old barns are now gone, and they will only live in our drawing and canvases now. 😭

🎨 My name is J.D. Fields and I love to draw and paint nature.
🎨 I was born in Southern California but I’m a two-time transplanted to Texas which I now call home.
🎨 I married my best friend and soul mate in 1998.
🎨 My husband has three children, two boy and a girl and I have one girl and two boys. When we got married, we put them altogether and call us all family
🎨 I am acrylic artist but I love to play with watercolor, watercolor pencils and color pencils.
🎨 When did I start learning to draw? I can remember being two and half years old laying on my grandma kitchen floor trying to draw the animal on her land.
🎨 Growing up I have been able to explored many different medium – Fabric Art, Crocheting, Oil Paint, Pen & Ink Painting and Color Pencils, Charcoal and Graphite Pencil. Along with acrylic painting.
🎨 Do you sell your work? Yes, I sell my originals, painting, drawing and greeting cards online and in galleries.
🎨 Do you teach classes? Yes, I teach Acrylic for Beginner’s workshop to adult. I also teach drawing and Acrylics for teens.
🎨 Back in the early 2000 I had wanted to try my hand in plein air. In July 2013 I took the plug and never look back.
🎨 Whether I’m in my studio or outdoors I am still learning to draw upon those early influences in a way that I look at life, the subject I chooses and the matter in which I paints.
