My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

————————————————-

Today adventure is the little town call Llano, Texas

I my plan was to spend the hold day painting but hubby was with me and I wanted to give him time to sight see as I explore to find places to paint.

We first went to the Whimseys Museum, then to the Llano Red Top Jail which is a historical site, Llano Country Courthouse other historical site, Llano River, Lantex Theater which was built in 1927 and we had to stop by Calamity and Grace which the lady to the museum told us to stop by and check out her shop and say hi.

At Calamity and Grace art shop and Gallery.

I was told about a form of art call “Earth Art” that they hold every year.

I could not resist buying this cute little 3 cat earth art painting. This painting is made out of rocks and twig from a tree. from what I was told all earth art has to be made from nature as in the the cast of this painting.

As we went back to look at the Historical Red Top Jail again I told hubby that the jail would be a challenge to paint or draw but I don’t think he like the idea for he never answer me and took off driving again.  So I had him take me to residential street call 800 Hickory.

There at the end of the cul-de-sac we come to a big oak tree were someone make a tree house.

Again I felt funny about painting, like I could not paint. So I pull out my drawing pad and ink pens and I stay in the truck with hubby where it was cool. For it was really hot outside and I believe it was a 100 or more.

From there we went down to the old train track where they have an old caboose park in front of some restaurants. This is the original train track that they kept as a historical site.

 I drew that one too.

From there we drove around the Llano River and enjoy the view and from there we came back onto the square but now it is midday and hotter then blazes. I wanted to draw a quick sketch of the Lantex Theater. And I do mean quick for it was hot! About 100 that day.

We decided to go back to the RV but not before he took me to see other art gallery.

Enchanted Rock State Park

My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

————————————————-

Hubby and I drove out to the state park early in the morning.

Everyone told that me that the park has some every old and lovely red rocks.

This is what I found out.

Park History

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area sits on Big Sandy Creek on the border of Gillespie and Llano counties. It is 18 miles north of Fredericksburg.

The Nature Conservancy of Texas purchased the property from Charles Moss in 1978. It later sold the 1,640.5-acre property to the state of Texas. The state bought an additional three acres to add to the park.

Enchanted Rock opened as a state natural area in October 1978.  It is a National Natural Landmark, and is on the National Register of Historic Places as an Archeological District.

More than 400 archeological sites have been found in the park. All are protected, and 120 of them are designated State Archeological Landmarks.

More than 250,000 people trek to the park each year to experience the magic of Enchanted Rock. In fact, it is one of the most visited parks in the state park system.

Area History

Humans have camped in this area for 12,000 years.

One enduring sign of their time here remains:  Prehistoric people ground or pounded their food on granite rocks throughout the park. They left depressions in the granite, called bedrock mortars.

The Spaniards first explored Central Texas in the 1700s. They mounted raids against the Lipan Apache and attempted to colonize this area. They established a mission and presidio on the San Saba River in the mid-1700s, and tried to establish a silver mine on Honey Creek near the Llano River.

Germans and Americans arrived by the mid-1800s, drawn by dreams of having land of their own and tales of gold and silver.

Captain Jack Hays:  Capt. John Coffee (Jack) Hays was a surveyor and legendary Texas Ranger. While surveying near Enchanted Rock in 1841, Indians attacked Hays and a group of men. Cut off from the others, Hays climbed the rock and holed up in a depression at the summit. He fought off his attackers for three hours, before his companions came to his aid.

Myths and Legends

Enchanted Rock has fascinated humans for thousands of years. As a result, it has inspired many stories that endure today. Most of these are rooted in fancy rather than fact.

Tonkawa Indians thought that ghost fires flickered on top of the dome. The odd creaking and groaning coming from the dome frightened them. But don’t worry! Geologists say that the dome creaks and groans as temperatures change. As for the ghost fires, the rock glitters on clear nights after rain. Scientists think the glittering is reflections from collected water or wet feldspar.

One story tells of an Indian maiden who saw her tribe killed by an enemy. She threw herself off the top of Enchanted Rock, and her spirit haunts the rock still. Another

romantic story tells of a young Spanish soldier who rescued his true love just as Comanches were about to burn her at the base of the rock.

Once, the Tonkawa captured a Spanish conquistador, who escaped by hiding in the rocks. This gave rise to an Indian legend of a “pale man swallowed by a rock and reborn as one of their own.” The Indians believed he wove enchantments on the area.

As we came into the park I started looking at the landscape to see what I could paint. I did find some trees that were interesting but one tree catch my eye. It was twisted and there was some sickly looking cactus that I have ever seen.

0914171057a

I had hubby park in front of the tree so I could set up my art gear next to the truck.

I don’t know why but I felt so awkward setting up to paint the tree and cactus. I felt like I was not suppose to paint.

0914171034

But I brush off the feeling put a smile on my face and stated to paint with a brush but did not feel right in my hand. (I like to paint with a palette knife) So I pick up my knife and painted over what I had already done.

I am hot!!!

It was hot and all I could think of is “Where a breeze?”

Then like gift, a gentle breeze can in and boy did it feel good but as I was getting comfortable with the breeze but not with my painting. Then my breeze turn on me and became a big wind that pick up my umbrella, took it off my chair and carry it across the street and into the castus.

I was so frustrated that I pack up my gear and place it back into the truck.

Now you mite be thinking. “Why are you giving up so easily?” ” You should have stuck it out.”

Will when the wind pick up and I work with acrylic paint. its not a good combo.

clip art - Don't give up

So I climb back into the truck and pull out my drawing bag but bad luck was still with me for I found out that I did not have all of my tool to draw with.

Did I give up?

No.

I suck it up and I used what I had to draw with. My Faber Castell Pens and Canson Mix Media drawing pad.

You can say I went old school in plein air style.

Here is one of my drawing of the twisted old oak tree and cactus.

Plus I started other drawing but by the time I got half way done hubby was getting antsy so we left to get something to eat.

Castell General Store

————————————————-

Hubby let me sleep in an hour and boy did I need it.

Today on the OPS itinerary is to head out to a little town call Castell, Texas about 17 miles from Llano.

As we drove out to Castell I kept seeing these rain gauges on the side of the road where the road dips down.

I could not believe how high the water can get out here.

As we came into town you first see a white wood frame building that house the post office and I think the Library. (next to the building is this building) And kitty corner from this building you will see the Castell General Store.

Across from the General Store you will come across Llano River. Hubby and I drove over the road/spillway to see where I could paint. But there was no place to park. So we cross over the the road/spillway again and as we did  we could see the old church steeple.

When we got on the other side we drove around and found it.

I had hubby park in front of the church as I church as I walk around the church.

As I look around I found where I wanted to paint. So I walk back to were Hubby was and we drove around to the back of the church. As I stood beside the truck to get ready to pull out my gear when i felt a bite on the back of my neck, then other on my right breast. (I know TMI)

When I look down I saw the biggest black ants I ever did see.

Will that stop my plant there and hubby won’t let me paint in his truck so that left me once again to draw.

Once we were done we drove back to the General Store and I set up my gear to paint but once again I could not get the feeling of it.

Maybe I’ve been in the studio too long???

I don’t know… but again I pull out my drawing book to draw not wanting to give up on creating some type of artwork.

As I drew the smell of the barbecue that was cooking was making me and hubby hungry. So once I got done with the drawing and we headed over to the general store to get a bite to eat.

————————————————

With summer in Texas it is just to hot to paint outdoors, at lease for me.

Now if I was back in Southern California I could go up in the mountain or to the beach to cool off and paint. But I am not there, I am here living in North Texas and the OPS (Outdoor Painters Society) is gearing up for their fall paint-outs and they are going to be painting in the Hill Country of Texas at Enchanted Rock State Park on Thursday , Llano on Friday and Castell Saturday this Sept 15,16, 17.

Now I had sign up for this paint-out back in Jan 2017.

But just recently I was not sure if hubby and I we’re going to be able to go to the paint out this month.

It seems that hubby was waiting to find out if our church was going to have other camp out this month. But it seems at the last minute things change and we’re going on the pain out now.

So what seem like forever to get an answer, now I am busy cleaning the house and RV, trying to remember what I always pack every time we went out camping, trying to find all my plein air gear (it got move from the last time I went out) and I decided to make a new plein air bag for my pencils, color pencils and watercolor pencils. (quick sketch only.)

I was thinking I had plenty of canvases prepared to take with me…WRONG!!!!

When I did the Paint Historic Waxahachie paint out. I had plenty of canvases but what I didn’t use at the paint out I used in my studio.

So now I have to gesso some canvases to take with me. What was I thinking?

Now I am not worry about running up to the art store to buy more canvases.

What people don’t know about me is I am a canvas hog. I love all size of canvases.

BUT WAIT!!!

I forgot to tell my hubby to set up a reservation for a campground.

So now I’m a little stressed out at the moment.

But hubby was a real trooper. After a lot of calls to campgrounds in and around Llano, he found one that had only been open for two weeks, just built.

The RV site is called Lazy Rayzz RV Park and Buchanan Damn just 17 miles from Llano Texas.

    Now that’s a relief…

Back to packing we leave in one week.
