My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

I would like to talk to all oil artist. What is you happy medium?

A while back Gamblin post this on their website and I thought it was something to look into.

I know, I know y’all love you linseed oil or walnut oil or no oil at all. But before you shut me off, check this site out and see if something catches you interest.

I want to state that I am not a sale person for Gamblin nor are do they paying me to post this. I just thought it was an interesting post.

Less toxic way of painting

FullSizeRender (16)

My Adventure Plein Air.

I have been on the net, blogs, and any other thing I could get my hands on to find a way to paint in a more non toxic way of painting with oils and I think I found it.

While I was reading different post on FaceBook I came across Marc R. Hanson OPAM post. I am going to post a bits of his post that I think will help anyone who is on a quest to be a toxic free.

Marc R. Hanson stated off …”In my personal quest to paint with oils in a less toxic way, meaning ridding my studio space of as much petroleum distillate as is possible, but in a way that still feels comfortable to me, I think I might be there…I have drawers full of traditional oils that need to be used. I’ve settled on using Gamblin’s Solvent Free Painting Fluid for a medium, and Safflower oil in my brush washer for cleaning brushes during a painting session…

This is how I do it. I keep the medium (what ever medium you chose to use) and the Gamsol in these eye dropper topped bottles.eyes drop bottle

If I need a dissolved wash in the early stages of a painting, like Gamsol allows (and the other “solvent free” mediums don’t, being based on safflower oil), I can control the amount much easier using the eye dropper.

To add medium to the paints, I can add the same amount, by drop(s), to each paint pile. In this way I have both control over how much medium is in each paint layer, and I can control how much solvent is in my studio atmosphere.

It’s an evolving trial and error process. This seems like a good way to go for me.

If you would like to read this in its full content go to FaceBook and look up Marc R. Hanson OPAM.
