My Adventure Plein Air
I have been ask by a lot by folks on “How do you keep your acrylic paint so moist or wet when painting Plein Air?”
Well I will tell you, when I would go out doors to paint I would lay out my color and by the time I would paint my sketch
My paint would already have a skin over them and would be stating to dry out.
So I did a lot of reseach and talk to a lot of artist and I want to share what I learn with all of you.
Some artist post on FaceBook, blogs,You Tube all suggested I use clear Gesso and my good old trusty spray bottle.
Ok I will try that.
That works great in the studio but out on the fields not so good.
So I took my Plein Air easel that has a glass palette and lay two moist paper towels and on top of it I place a couple of sheets of parchment or wax paper (I buy mind at the 99 cent store) to use as a wet palette for my acrylic paints.
Note: If you don’t won’t to make a home made wet palette you can buy a wet palette at Jerry Artarama.com
This work out great but I still was looking for something differnt.
Then one day I was painting with Plein Air Artist of Riverside (PAAR) and I saw other artist using what look like pill box’s to store her paint.
I was so amaze by this that I went and ask her about her paint storage kit.
She told me how she loves use her pill boxs to store her paint in and how will they stay moist.
Hummm? I have a new home made wet palette but I still need something more so why not try the pill box’s as a paint box.
I went to the Dollar Gental and bought four weekly pill boxs and load them with all the colors I have in my paint box.
Once all my paint are layed out I will place a few drops of clear gesso and I will a touch of retarter to help keep my paint creamy for a long time. When I find that my paints need a boost of moisture I will spray them with my water bottle, just enough to wet them again or add more clear gesso to it.
And remember you can place your new paint box in your freeze to keep your paint nice and moist longer between your painting trip.

Howdy Margaret,
I am glad you got some good nuggets from my post.
Please keep me updated on how u are doing with the pill box’s. I love mind. I just pull them out of the ice box (freezer) and a way I go. No more carring tubs of paint. I just get the amt of paint I need, place it on the palette, close the led and away I paint.
God bless and happy painting
