As we come to the end of 2022

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always and interesting to be discovered and painted.

As this year is coming to an end, I have given my Crazy Plein Air Adventures a lot of thought this past couple of months. It is sad that for the last two years, I have let my plein air fall to the wayside because…

1. I took some Cholesterol medication with statin back in 2018 which by 2020 had paralyzed my legs and part of my arms.

2. I felt scared because I had to go thought this during Corvid without see my doctor.

3. I felt my independences gone.

4. During Corvid my hubby heart valve was ready to tear and that meant I could have lost him. Plus, if he survives, which he did, I could not take care of him. So our son had to care for both of us for a time.

5. And so much more…

But now that artist can go back to the outdoors to painting again, I am still re-laying on my sweet hubby to drive me where I need to go.

So what about plein air?

Well, as I said earlier, I have made up my mind that I am NOT GOING TO STOP PAINTING OUTDOORS. So I have signed up with OPS Outdoors Painters Society again, but don’t tell my hubby what I did. ha ha

My plan is to use the OPS to plan our vacations around their events.

Can I be real with all of you? Please forgive me if I offend any of you with my statement. You see, I have found and have heard many artists say that they don’t like to have THEIR husbands or wife’s tag along on paint out. They feel that they can’T be their self to work on their painting ( whatever that means.) I

My hubby drives me to our location to paint, helps me set up and tear down my gear and if I am in a lot of pain or just need help, he helps me out of my chair and into the car and so much more.

He does all of this because he love me and he knows how happy it makes me feel to be outdoors painting nature again.

So I will be the lone stranger Ha Ha painting with my hubby by my side. Plus, we will try and get out on our own and do some quick drawing and simple paintings before the Paint Historic Waxahachie event opens up in May.

Plus, I will start becoming more active on this site with my crazy adventures, Plein Air info, and my recovery, too.

But before I go, I want to wish everyone…

Until next time, my friends keep creating, and God bless y’all.

Q & A

Who is this gal name J.D. Fields

🎨 My name is J.D. Fields and I love to draw and paint nature.

🎨 I was born in Southern California, but I’m a two-time transplanted to Texas, which I now call home.

🎨 I married my best friend and soul mate in 1998.

🎨 My husband has three children, two boys and a girl, and I have one girl and two boys. When we got married, we put them all together and called us all family

🎨 I am an acrylic artist, but I love to play with watercolor, watercolor pencils, and color pencils.

🎨 When did I start learning to draw? I can remember being two and half years old, laying on my grandma kitchen floor, trying to draw the animal on her land.

🎨 Growing up, I have been able to explore many different mediums – Fabric Art, Crocheting, Oil Paint, Pen & Ink Painting and Color Pencils, Charcoal and Graphite Pencil. Along with acrylic painting.

🎨 Do you sell your work? Yes, I sell my originals, painting, drawing, and greeting cards online and in galleries.

🎨 Do you teach classes? Yes, I teach acrylic for Beginner’s workshop to adults. I also teach drawing and acrylics for teens.

🎨 Back in the early 2000, I had wanted to try my hand in plein air.      In July 2013, I took the plug and never looked back.

🎨 Whether I’m in my studio or outdoors, I am still learning to draw upon those early influences in a way that I look at life, the subject I chooses and the matter in which I paints.

————————————————–

Well summer will be here soon and before the heat hits I want to go back to a site that I had painted before but this time I want to use my color pencils.

So after church I went and grab me something to eat and drove to my site.

From what I can tell this is an old abandoned substation. What dept I don’t know?

I pull into the abandoned parking lot and set up my supplies .

Now what I did was brought a small table to set up my color pencils. I laid out my color pencils case’s, a pencil sharpener, a rule (large and small) and a eraser.

Next was my chair with an umbrella and a table top easel to set on my lap.

Now I am set but I forgot one thing, my hat. I like to wear a hat when I paint or draw. It helps keep the light out of my eyes even thou I do use a umbrella.

Now I am ready.

As I sat there drawing and listening to nature, I found that drawing outdoors is way different than indoor. With indoors you have the comfort of stretching out, laying out your pencils so you don’t have to look for them and just be creative.

But outside you are limited on what you can bring as in color pencils. Plus you don’t have the room to stretch out and draw as you do as if you were at home, so for me this seem to take longer to be creative.

I soon found out that time had run out for me and beside my hand was starting to hurt too.

I will need to go back to finish this drawing but it has taught me that if I plein air with color pencils then I will needed a lot more time to draw than when I paint.

If you like to draw or use color pencils they why not try it for you self. See if you don’t get hook on the challenge.

Long time since we talked…

FullSizeRender (16)

My Adventure Plein Air

I know it has been a while since I last posted but it is humid and hot here in North Texas so while we are in the summer season I will be doing more plein air drawings with my graphite and color pencils than painting.

All my painting during the summer season will be in my studio. If you would like to follow me as I post a step up step of what I am working on please go to  https://whatsonjdeasel.wordpress.com/

Well what have I been up to since the last time we talk? Since the weather has been heating up I decided to create a little… 442

Note# I did not paint this and do not know who the artist is. But this is a good example of how to create a home made sketchbook that I carry in my pocketbook all the time.

These are great to drawing or sketch in while you are waiting for your lunch, window shopping, picking up the kids at the mall, etc.

A sample is while I was out to lunch with hubby the other day I saw hanging on the wall a deer head which I thought was something I wanted to try my hand at.

I place my little book on my lap and started to draw. It was a little funny to watch the waiter try his best to sneak a peak at what I was doing. All he had to do was ask and I would have showed him. but since he did’nt I had funny playing peek-a-boo with him.

A few weeks later we went out for breakfast when I happen to look up at the wall across from my hubby head I saw the mental piece of art work that was a fish just hanging there. I could not take my eyes off of it for the colors were just so lovely that I had to do a quick sketch of it.

0716161110a_resized

As you can see I added some notes on the fish to remind me of the colors that I saw.

Also I have been working on a 11″x 14″ drawing of a old feed store in my home town area. I started out sitting in my car with the radio on working with some graphite pencils, drawing a every will know food store. but when I stared to shade it in I found that once again I was to tight with my drawing. So I stop and went home, set the drawing aside to think about how I could loosen up but still have a nice drawing.

IMG_4438

A few weeks later I need to get my RV and house ready for my children and grandchildren to come spend their vacation time with us. As time drew closer I pick back up the feed store drawing once again and this time I would try something different. I was going to add some color pencils to it but in the studio.

 IMG_20160615_183105_resized

Here I started the upper part of the building  but as you can see I mess up the lettering so I will need to go back over it with white paint after I get the drawing complete.

0616162037_resized

Here is this picture I was trying to add some light but soon realize that I needed to keep the building in uniform.

0616162215_resized

This is were I left off.

Now I am going to take the drawing back out on the field to finish it. But a question keeps rolling around in my mind, “Is it still a plein air drawing if I finish it out doors? “Remember I started it outdoors and will finish it out outdoors but I did work on it in the studio for a bit.” “Oh and we know that it can not be call a All Prima Plein Air since it came into the studio.”

Hummm????

Food for thought?

Once I complete it I will post it again .
