15 Ideas for a Painting

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

The other day, I was talking with some of my plein air artist friends, and we were talking about how hot and dry it is in North Texas.

A lot of us are in a funk do to the heat and the dry weather. I know I am. So if you feel like a lot of us.  Try this post from the Plein Air Magazine.

Q & A

Who is this gal name, J.D. ?

🎨 My name is J.D. Fields and I love to draw and paint nature.

🎨 I am a Texas artist

🎨 I married my best friend and soul mate in 1998.

🎨 My husband has three children, two boys and a girl, and I have one girl and two boys. When we got married, we put them altogether and called us all family

🎨 I am an acrylic artist, but I love to play with watercolor, watercolor pencils, color pencils, and pens.

🎨 Do you or have you ever painted in oils?

🎨 Yes, I used to paint in oil in the beginning (1977 – 1984), but I became allergic to the oils and cleaning  products and had to stop.

🎨 When did I start learning to draw? I can remember being two and half years old, laying on my grandma kitchen floor, trying to draw the animal on her land.

🎨 Growing up, I have been able to explore many different mediums – Fabric Art, Sewing, Crocheting, Oil Paint, Pen & Ink Painting, Color Pencils, Charcoal, Graphite Pencil. Along with acrylic painting.

🎨 Do you sell your work?

🎨  Yes, I sell my originals, painting, drawing, and greeting cards online and in galleries.

🎨 Do you create portraits ?

🎨 Not really. I am a landscape and a pet portrait artist.

🎨 Do you sell painting with frames.

🎨  Only if they are a custom frame made for the painting.

🎨 How can I purchase a painting that I already like but has been already sold ?

🎨  You can email me at j.d.fieldsartist@gmail.com and place in the subject line “the name of the painting”

🎨  I will be happy to recreate a similar one, but it will not be a copy. All my paintings are original.

 🎨 Do you teach classes?

🎨 Yes, I teach acrylic for Beginner’s adults. I also teach drawing and acrylics for teens too.

🎨 Back in the early 2000, I had wanted to try my hand in plein air. In July 2013, I took the plug and never looked back.

🎨 Whether I’m in my studio or outdoors, I am still learning to draw upon those early influences in a way that I look at life, the subject I chooses and the matter in which I paint.

Bluebonnets on Flag Hill

Welcome to My Crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.
———————————————-
The other day some of my painting buddies, “The Ellis County Painter” had decided to go out to Sugar Ridge Winery & Bistro Bristol to paint the beautiful cattle ranches and the beautiful Bluebonnets on the Bluebonnets Trail.
Hubby drove me to the location which I am always happy to have him with me.

The group found a pretty little lake with two swans in it and a alot of Bluebonnets.
We pull over, I found my spot and I set up my gear, pull out a 11″x 14″ canvas board and sat down to paint.
Now I know that a lot of artist blogger will always but thier best foot forward when blogging but I want to be real with y’all.
I want to tell you what went on in my crazy artistic little head.
Ok let start with the lake…
As I look out across the lake I was drawn to a little rusty bridge, a Texas flag, lots a trees and the beautiful Bluebonnets.
I told my self, “This is what I want to paint”. So with all the confidence of the world in me I started to lay down the bones of the painting.
I thought that since it is Bluebonnets season that folks would not be out on Bluebonnet tail on a Monday, I was so wrong.
It seem that at the med morning and all day folks were coming to see the Bluebonnets and take photos.
As they stop to take pictures of the Bluebonnets I found them  come up from behind me and started taking pictures of me painting. My thought was OMG NO!!!  THIS PAINTING IS AT THE UGLY STAGE!
Will I kept painting but my confidence leave was starting to drop and my inner critic started to raise her ugly head. To tell the truth I just wanted to trash the painting, pack up and run with my tail between my legs.
Have any of ya felt that way?
I told my self that this year was my year to turn thing around and keep pushing my self.
As I sat there painting with folks coming up to check out my work and talk to me.
My allergies started to kick in and the bugs started to bit my legs. But I kept on painting, had a great time, earn a lot about the different folks who stop by and really work my brain muscle while painting. (with being sick for a little over a year I did not get outdoors to paint at all.)

This acrylic painting is an 11″x 14″ canvas board call Bluebonnets on Flag Hill.

The next day the group group all went to different locations to paint.
So I decided to go back to Maypearl (Texas) just down the street from where I live and go back to that 100 year old barn where we all painted at.
Text
I had spotted two little site that I want to paint last time but ran out of time.
So on this day the weather man siad we had a high chance of a rain storm to come in.  But I was going to take my chance and head out.
As I got to the site it was quite and the bird were singing and the bugs were biting.
Being by my self felt different but I did enjoy the alone time with nature. There was a few cars & trucks that drove by every now and then but over all it was quite.
As I was painted I found that the painting needed a little color so as you can see I took my artistic licence an embellish the fence line with a little color.
Next…
Once I completed the first painting I started on the gate painting. But as I started to put the bones of the painting down on canvas I could see the clouds starting to get a little dark.  But I kept painting and then I could hear way off in the distance thunder. Right there was my clue to pack up and go home.
Spoiler alert:
When I got home the storm had moved and it never rain that day.
This is acrylic painting on a 5″x 7″ canvas board call “Simple Pleasures”

Now that spring is coming early it is time to pull out the plein air gear and get those canvases ready.

If you are new to plein air than this checklist is for you. Even if you are a intermediate to advanced plein air artist it is always good to go over a checklist as a reminder.

Last year I struggled with Plein Air but this year is a new year and I am looking forward to getting out there to paint again.

Now that fall is here and winter is just around the corner it will be to cold for some of us to be outdoor, so why not spend this time to rethink out your Plein Air set and where to you want to adventure too.

As I sit here listening to the Fall wind howl and the rain on it ways I found this great blog by Dan Schultz.

I know I will be hitting the open air again to paint outdoors this fall and winter. (it is to hot in the Texas heat for me to paint) So I will be blogging again soon.

I want to share an old blog that a friend Kath Hoelzhammer had posted on my FaceBook page back in 2015 and I just found it again on FB memories.

I want to share with y’all these great nuggets by Lori McKee Artist:

Tips For Marketing To Strangers While Painting En Plein Air

————————————————–

Artist who work en plein air must deal with natural and self-imposed burdens every time we go out paint – including the possibility  of marketing to strangers.

We load our packs (paints, thinner, brushes, palette, canvas panel, towels, garbage bags, clamps, bungee cords, sunscreen, hat, collapsible umbrella, water and power bars) carry our easels, set up and stand for hours at a time. We are at the mercy of the weather, the land and the ever-changing light.

plein air, backpacking, yellowstone

Lori backpacking with her plein air gear in Yellowstone National Park

If these obstacles weren’t enough, people interrupt us to talk while we are painting! It’s a wonder we get anything done, much less create a body of work to sell.

WAIT…that’s all wrong! We plein air artists have it made – we have a unique marketing and sales advantage over studio artists. We can talk to strangers, and turn them into collectors!

All artists who sell their work need people to buy it. Family, friends and acquaintances may be interested in our art, and they may purchase it. But, it is the people we don’t know who are key to sustaining sales and having an art career.

So, what about those strangers who “interrupt” us? They are interested, potential collectors with whom we have a marketing opportunity to create a relationship.

Plein Air Petaluma

“Marsh and Mountain” by Linda Rosso

Consider this very typical conversation:

THEM: “Can I see? Nice painting!”

YOU: “Thanks! This is a gorgeous spot to paint.”

THEM: “Yes, it’s one of my favorite views.”

The conversation can then take a variety of turns, depending on what you say next:

(A) “Mine, too. Enjoy your day.”

(B) “I’ll be posting the finished painting on my website. Would you like a business card?

(C) “Would you like a photo of the painting when it’s done? I’ll be happy to email it to you.”

Choose (A), and you have ended the conversation. You have been friendly, but you have not made a business connection.

If you respond with (B)you have created an opening to a relationship. You shared information, and indirectly suggested the other person take action – to look at your website. If they say no, you can say (A) and return to painting.

By selecting (C)you are in the best position to create a relationship. You are offering something, and it exchange, you may get something – the email address of someone open to knowing more about you and your art. If they decline, you can revert to (B) and offer a business card. If they decline, say (A) and get back to painting.

The next time you are in the field, give it a try. The small risk of engaging in a conversation may offer a reward. And you might consider adding an empty box to your plein air pack – you might sell a wet canvas to a stranger right off your easel!

Howdy everyone,

Sorry I have not been on the site. I had been carrying for my mom until her death this past October.

fb_img_1475372244582.jpgNow I am pulling my self together and was planning on getting outdoors to paint again but the Antarctic wind came though with freezing raining and it was to cool for this California gal to get out in this Texas weather. Now the weather is warm, cold, cloudy, foggy, just crazy weather I am planning on getting outdoor soon to paint.

img_4390.jpgSo for now this nutty weather we are having it has given me time to catch up on emails, write my newsletter, blogs, etc again.

Here is one of those blogs I found on plein air. It is full of great info. Some of it I thing I am going to try like… 03# home-brew, 09# and 10# a home-brew that I am going to make.

I hope y’all enjoy this little article as much as I have.
