First Baptist Church in Palmer

Welcome to my crazy Plein Air Adventures blog.

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject.

That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (Plein Air) so interesting to me. There are always interesting things to be discovered and painted.

Friday-04/14/23

Today, we got a late start again. It was a little after 11:00 am when we left the house.

I have been wanting to paint the First Baptist Church-Landmark in Palmer (Texas).

I had decided that I was going to paint again with my watercolors so I loaded up the car and away we went.

Well, I could tell Hubby was not feeling well.  As he was driving for some reason, he was thinking of going to Palmer but was driving to Ferris. When I realize which way we were heading, that means we would be that much longer on the road to get to Palmer and for me to paint the church.

Once we got to the church, it was sunny with clouds cover and light wind.

I ask hubby to park across the street at a small grassy storage unit. We are talking county style.

I set up and started to paint, but the problem is my cataracts are making  it hard for me to see clearly, but I am determined to try my hand at painting this church.

As I was painting, the sky started to get dark, and I thought it was going to start raining, but then the sun would come out and burn my arms.

Before I knew it, the clouds were back, and I just kept painting.

It was about 3:00 pm and my eye are starting to hurt, my mind, eyes and hand is not working together (my eyes are getting really tied and they hurt) so I call it a day and will need to go back and finish my painting.

Note: What I am finding out is if I had painted with my acrylics, I would have completed this paint in no time but because I am use watercolor it is a learning experience on how much water to use, how much paint to mix, what brushes to use, etc. But most of all, until I am more experienced with watercolors, I will not be painting on an 11″ x 14″ sheet of 120 lb watercolor paper while plein Air.

Note: We came back on Monday even though hubby was sick so I could wrap up my painting.

Q & A

Who is this gal name, J.D. ?

🎨 My name is J.D. Fields and I love to draw and paint nature.

 🎨 I’m a two-time transplanted to Texas, which I now call home.

🎨 I married my best friend and soul mate in 1998.

🎨 My husband has three children, two boys and a girl, and I have one girl and two boys. When we got married, we put them altogether and called us all family

🎨 I am an acrylic artist, but I love to play with watercolor, watercolor pencils, color pencils and pens.

🎨 Do you or have you ever painted in Oils?

🎨 Yes, I use to paint in oil in the beginning (1977 – 1984) but I became allergic to the oils and cleaning products and had to stop.

🎨 When did I start learning to draw? I can remember being two and half years old, laying on my grandma kitchen floor, trying to draw the animal on her land.

🎨 Growing up, I have been able to explore many different mediums – Fabric Art, Crocheting, Oil Paint, Pen & Ink Painting and Color Pencils, Charcoal and Graphite Pencil. Along with acrylic painting.

🎨 Do you sell your work?

🎨 Yes, I sell my originals, painting, drawing, and greeting cards online and in galleries.

 🎨 Do you create portraits?

🎨 Not really. I am a landscape artist.

🎨 Do you sell painting with frames.

🎨 Only if they are a custom frame made for the painting.

🎨 How can I purchase a painting that I ready like but has been already sold?

🎨 You can email me at j.d.fieldsartist@gmail.com and place in the subject line”the name of the painting.” I will be happy to recreate a similar one, but it will not be a copy. All my paintings are original.

 🎨 Do you teach classes?

🎨 Back in the early 2000, I had wanted to try my hand in Plein air. In July 2013, I took the plug and never looked back.

🎨 Whether I’m in my studio or outdoors, I am still learning to draw upon those early influences in a way that I look at life, the subject I chooses and the matter in which I paints.
