My Adventure Plein Air

Beauty is where you find it. And sometimes it’s found by climbing over a few fences to get to an unusual subject. That’s part of what makes outdoor painting (plein air) so interesting to me. There are always new and interesting things to be discovered and painted.

I have been wanting to go outdoors and paint but have been making excuses why I could not go out.
To tell the truth I am still grieving over the lost of my sweet momma. But I know deep down in my heart she would want me to stop making these dumb excuses and get outdoors.
So today I went out on an errand and when I was done I grab my small plein air bag and off I went to paint.

I don’t usually paint building for I love to paint landscape but today I goal is to bone up on painting building and house.

As I drove around town I found a house on Kaufman Street that reminded me of  a Christmas house.
The temperature was 72 degrees, overcast with grey clouds but had a beautiful blue sky that would play peak-a-boo with the clouds. Plus the wind was blowing pretty strong and would dry out my acrylic paint. So I opted to paint in my car once again.
I had brought with me some 5″x 7″ gray canvas board that I did not gesso. As I started to paint I found out every quickly that I was going to have a hard time laying down my paint. Note to self, go back to the studio and gesso all your new tented canvases.
As I was painting this house I so want to stop many times and call it quits  because I felt like I was painting like a child and not a plein air artist.
Have I lost my way since I took care of my sweet momma? Or am I just out of practice?
Either way I am determine to fine my way back to painting plein air again.
My first step is to get outdoors at lease two times a week or more until I can fine my way back.

Well that night I did not sleep will because I keep thinking of the child like painting that I created.(I was betting my self up all night)  So the next day I gather my pencils and color pencils to try to see how things would work as a plein air drawing.

This is what I learn for me…

1. Less messy

2. Much more lighter to carry

3. Must learn a new method of laying down color in a shorter time.

4. Just get the feel of the Drawing like the impressionist did with their paintings.

5. stop try to put in detail. You are not in your studio.

It has been over a week and a half now and I have not gone back to the Kaufman Street house.

This time I had to go pay my car tags. So I had my son go with me to get him out of the house.
After I had payed my tags, we started driving and I found a street that I never drove down before.
Me and my son drove down East Jefferson Street (in Waxahachie, Tx) until the road end and it became an old gravel road. On my right side was two cemeteries put together WAKEFIELD & FRATERNAL.
I kept  driving until I ended up at the end of the road.

As I was turning around I saw this lovely old wood fence. I pull over and pull out my pencils to draw.

I has been years since I plein air with pencils but I must say I had a lot of fun.
